World Cup 2026 Golden Boot: Can Mbappé Retain His Crown?

11 June 2026 by

With the expanded 48-team World Cup set to deliver more matches than ever before, the race for the Golden Boot could be one of the tournament’s most fascinating side stories. The award, handed to the competition’s top goalscorer, has often elevated players from stars to legends, and several of world football’s biggest names will arrive in North America with their sights firmly set on finishing at the top of the scoring charts.

Defending Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé returns after scoring eight goals in Qatar four years ago, while Harry Kane and James Rodríguez are also looking to add another World Cup scoring title to their collections. However, a new generation of challengers is emerging, and the expanded format may significantly alter the race.

The Favourites

Mbappé enters the tournament as the man everyone else must catch. The French superstar was sensational in 2022 and remains one of the most prolific forwards in international football. France’s attacking strength should provide him with plenty of opportunities to add to his World Cup tally.

England captain Harry Kane will also be confident. The 2018 Golden Boot winner remains his country’s primary penalty taker and focal point in attack. England’s ability to progress deep into the tournament could prove crucial in a competition where extra matches offer additional scoring opportunities.

Perhaps the most intriguing contender is Norway’s Erling Haaland. Despite being one of the world’s most feared goalscorers, the 2026 tournament will be his first World Cup appearance. If Norway can advance beyond the group stage, Haaland’s clinical finishing could quickly propel him into contention.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi remains impossible to ignore. While age may have reduced some of his explosiveness, his influence, creativity and penalty-taking responsibilities mean he could still challenge for the top scorer award if Argentina make another deep run.

The Dark Horses

Spain possess two players capable of mounting a serious challenge. Mikel Oyarzabal has developed into a reliable goalscorer at international level, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal continues to break records and exceed expectations.

Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo are also expected to feature prominently. Ronaldo, in particular, continues to defy age and remains a threat whenever Portugal reach the latter stages of major tournaments.

History suggests, however, that the Golden Boot often produces unexpected winners. Italy’s Totò Schillaci arrived at the 1990 World Cup as a squad player before emerging as the tournament’s leading scorer. Four years later, Russia’s Oleg Salenko shared the award despite his nation failing to progress from the group stage.

With more matches available in 2026, opportunities for surprise challengers may be greater than ever.

A New Era for the Golden Boot

The expanded tournament format introduces a round of 32, meaning teams reaching the semi-finals will play eight matches instead of the traditional seven. More minutes on the pitch naturally create more opportunities to score.

Even so, the all-time World Cup scoring record for a single tournament remains a daunting benchmark. France’s Just Fontaine scored an astonishing 13 goals during the 1958 World Cup, achieving the feat in only six matches.

Another important change concerns tie-breakers. Joint winners are no longer possible. If players finish level on goals, assists will separate them. Should goals and assists also be identical, the player who accumulated those numbers in fewer minutes will claim the award.

That means efficiency could prove just as important as finishing ability in deciding who lifts the Golden Boot in 2026.

Verdict

The expanded World Cup format makes predicting the Golden Boot more difficult than ever. Kylian Mbappé remains the standout candidate given France’s quality and his proven World Cup pedigree, but Haaland’s debut, Kane’s consistency and Messi’s enduring brilliance ensure fierce competition.

With eight matches potentially available to the finalists, the winning total could climb significantly higher than in recent tournaments. Whether one of the established stars delivers or another surprise package emerges remains one of the biggest questions heading into World Cup 2026.

Tip

Kylian Mbappé looks the strongest Golden Boot candidate, but Erling Haaland offers outstanding value if Norway can reach the knockout rounds.
