West Ham to Challenge PGMO Over Disallowed Goal

West Ham United have confirmed they will formally contact the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) to lodge concerns over the disallowed goal in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, with the club requesting detailed explanation and audio records from the incident.

Callum Wilson appeared to have delivered a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser at the London Stadium, a result that would have significantly bolstered the Hammers’ increasingly precarious survival hopes. However, a VAR review ordered by officials ruled the goal out for a foul committed by Pablo on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

The decision proved consequential far beyond West Ham’s own prospects. Arsenal’s victory extended their title lead to five points over Manchester City, a margin that could prove decisive in a ferociously competitive title race. For West Ham, the disallowed equaliser compounded their relegation anxiety; the Hammers remain 18th, one point below Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the Lilywhites’ Monday night clash with Leeds United.

BBC Sport understands West Ham will request the audio recordings between match referee Chris Kavanagh and VAR official Darren England, seeking clarity on the decision-making process and the specific foul identified.

The controversy has already divided opinion across the football landscape. Wayne Rooney, the former England and Manchester United striker, defended the decision during his Wayne Rooney Show podcast, describing it as “the one time I actually think VAR has done a really good job in such an important game.”

“It’s a clear foul,” Rooney explained. “You can clearly see the arm crosses his face and it impacts him getting to the ball. So I think it’s the right decision.”

However, Rooney acknowledged the broader frustration surrounding goalkeeper protection within the penalty area, a theme that has dominated VAR discourse throughout the season.

“I think where VAR is consistent and the referees are consistent—and I hate it—is you go anywhere near the goalkeeper and it’s a foul,” he said. “Throughout my career as a player, I’ve had a dislike for goalkeepers because of that reason. They can jump with their arms so they have got a big advantage and normally they come out with their knees and the studs down your back.

“But I think it is consistent with goalkeepers that if you go near them, they normally get a free-kick.”

The disallowed goal encapsulates West Ham’s survival struggle. Despite their recent resurgence—a three-game unbeaten run—the Hammers remain vulnerable entering the final weeks of the season. Arsenal’s victory, coupled with Tottenham’s momentum under Roberto De Zerbi, has intensified the pressure on manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.

West Ham face a defining period. Their mathematical safety remains achievable, but the margin for error has disappeared. The PGMO challenge represents a formal objection to Sunday’s decision, though overturning VAR determinations remains extraordinarily rare in English football.
