Liverpool Turns to Iraola After Dumping Slot

Bournemouth Boss Set for Anfield Talks

Liverpool will formally approach Andoni Iraola this week about replacing Arne Slot as head coach. The decision came swiftly on Saturday, just twelve months after Slot guided the club to the Premier League title.

The Reds are moving fast to secure their next manager. Iraola, who announced his Bournemouth departure in April, sits at the top of their list. The Spaniard delivered the Cherries’ best season on record—finishing sixth and securing Europa League football—just three points and one position ahead of Liverpool themselves.

The Philosophy Shift

Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes made the call to part ways with Slot. The Liverpool hierarchy believes the club needs a different approach: more aggressive, more front-footed, more urgent in its execution.

That vision aligns with Iraola’s methods at Bournemouth. He’s proven capable of organizing a side that plays with intensity and attacking intent. Hughes, now Liverpool’s sporting director, previously worked with Iraola when he held a technical role at the Cherries. That existing relationship could accelerate negotiations.

Iraola’s name has circulated elsewhere. Crystal Palace, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen have all shown interest. But Liverpool’s stature and resources present a compelling opportunity for the 43-year-old to take the next step in his managerial career.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Liverpool’s season painted a grim picture beneath the surface. Sixty points from thirty-eight matches represented their lowest Premier League total since 2015-16. They finished twenty-five points adrift of champions Arsenal despite spending £415m on six summer signings—a British record outlay.

That investment included a British transfer record of £125m for Alexander Isak from Newcastle. Florian Wirtz arrived for a then-club record £116m from Bayer Leverkusen. Yet despite such expenditure, the squad underperformed spectacularly.

They did qualify for next season’s Champions League, which provided a silver lining. Still, the gap between expectation and reality proved impossible to ignore. Slot couldn’t bridge it. Now Liverpool hope Iraola can.
