Why I have QPR finishing 21st
QPR have once again reshaped large parts of their squad, bringing in Tariq Lamptey, Boy Kemper, Pierce Charles and Calum Ward while saying goodbye to experienced figures such as Steve Cook, Paul Nardi and Isaac Hayden.
There is no shortage of potential within the group, but replacing experienced leaders is rarely straightforward. Lamptey could prove an excellent signing if he stays fit, while Charles is regarded as one of Britain’s brightest young goalkeepers. Even so, the squad still feels short of proven Championship quality in several key areas.
Consistency has been a recurring problem for Rangers in recent seasons, and I am not convinced this squad has improved enough to move comfortably into mid-table.
Strengths
QPR possess several exciting young players capable of making the difference on their day. If the new signings settle quickly, there is enough technical quality to compete with most sides in the division.
AdvertisementLoftus Road also remains one of the Championship’s most intimidating away grounds. A strong start at home could provide valuable momentum and confidence.
Weaknesses
Defensive organisation remains my biggest concern. Replacing experienced players is never easy, and building understanding across the back line takes time. The Championship rarely allows teams that luxury. Squad depth is another issue. Injuries in key positions could quickly expose a lack of proven alternatives.
Key player
Tariq Lamptey
If Lamptey can remain fit, he has the quality to become one of the Championship’s standout full-backs. His pace, attacking threat and Premier League experience could transform the right-hand side of QPR’s team.
Player who must deliver
Karamoko Dembélé
Few players in the squad possess Dembélé’s creativity and ability to unlock defences. If Rangers are to avoid another difficult campaign, they will need him to provide regular goals and assists throughout the season.
What they still need
QPR would benefit from another experienced centre-half, greater midfield depth and an additional striker capable of easing the attacking burden.
Those additions would give them a much stronger chance of avoiding another season spent looking over their shoulders.
Verdict
QPR have assembled an interesting squad with plenty of potential, but there are still too many unanswered questions. I expect them to remain competitive throughout the campaign, yet I believe defensive inconsistency and limited depth will leave them involved in the relegation battle. For that reason, I have Queens Park Rangers finishing 21st in my Championship predictions.
