Why I think Preston will be relegated
Preston are probably the team I’m most uncertain about among those expected to finish near the bottom. For many years, they have shown an impressive ability to avoid relegation, even when plenty of people have tipped them to go down. Good organisation, hard work, and a strong collective spirit have often been enough.
This summer, they have signed Lee Nicholls, Alfie Devine, and Jusef Erabi. At the same time, experienced players such as Will Keane, Robbie Brady, Jamal Lewis, and Michael Smith have left the club.
Alfie Devine could develop into one of the Championship’s most exciting midfielders this season. He brings creativity, drives forward with the ball, and has the ability to create chances.
Erabi is an exciting loan signing, but it is a huge step to come into the Championship and deliver double figures for goals straight away.
Strengths
Preston’s greatest strength remains their organisation. They are difficult to play against, rarely fall apart, and often make matches much closer than the quality on paper would suggest.
Devine could give the team a real attacking lift if he is given a central role, while Lee Nicholls is a dependable goalkeeper who should provide stability at the back.

I feel the squad has gradually lost too much experience over the past few seasons. Players like Will Keane and Robbie Brady offered leadership and composure while also having the quality to decide tight matches.
The biggest concern, however, is the attack. Preston lack an established goalscorer, meaning much of the responsibility will fall on new arrivals who are still adapting to the level.
I also think the team lacks pace, particularly in transition. Against the stronger sides, they could struggle to move quickly enough from defence to attack after winning possession.
Key player
Alfie Devine
He could be the player who keeps Preston in the Championship. If he can contribute goals, assists, and creativity throughout the season, their chances of survival will improve significantly.
One to watch
Jusef Erabi
He possesses plenty of exciting qualities, but the Championship is a demanding league. If he can score 12 to 15 goals, Preston could surprise a lot of people.
What they need
An established striker, more pace out wide, and a physically dominant centre-back to add even greater defensive stability.
Verdict
Preston have proved the experts wrong before, and they are guaranteed to make life difficult for plenty of opponents again this season.
However, I feel the margins are becoming increasingly fine. They have lost a little too much experience and attacking quality, while relying heavily on several new players to make an immediate impact.
I expect them to spend the entire season battling against relegation, and this time I don’t believe organisation alone will be enough. That is why I have Preston finishing 23rd.
