Why I have Portsmouth finishing 18th
Portsmouth impressed with their commitment and togetherness after winning promotion, proving they are capable of competing at Championship level. The challenge now is taking the next step.
The club have strengthened with the arrivals of Odin Bailey, Rocco Shein, Marko Milovanović, Eoin Kenny and Daniel Bielica. It is a balanced mix of young players with long-term potential and signings capable of making an immediate impact.
Rocco Shein could prove particularly important. His composure on the ball, passing range and ability to dictate the tempo should give Portsmouth greater control in midfield.
It may not have been the most eye-catching transfer window in the division, but Portsmouth have strengthened several key areas and appear to be building a squad that perfectly suits John Mousinho’s style of football.
Strengths
Fratton Park remains one of the most intimidating grounds in the Championship. Portsmouth’s supporters create an atmosphere that consistently lifts the team, making home matches a daunting prospect for visiting clubs.
The side are also well organised defensively and benefit from a manager who consistently gets the best from his players. Their work ethic, discipline and team spirit make them extremely difficult opponents, particularly on home soil.

Goals remain my biggest concern. Last season Portsmouth lacked a striker capable of consistently deciding matches, often relying on contributions from across the team. To move away from the relegation battle, they need someone capable of scoring 15 to 20 league goals.
Their away form must also improve. Being strong at Fratton Park alone will not be enough if they continue to struggle for points on the road. Finding greater consistency away from home could ultimately define their season.
Key player
Adrian Segečić
Segečić showed real quality last season and must once again become one of Portsmouth’s most influential attacking players.
His creativity and eye for goal will be essential if Pompey are to avoid another season spent looking over their shoulders.
One to watch
Rocco Shein
Shein is an elegant central midfielder who has the ability to bring greater control and composure to Portsmouth’s play. If he adapts quickly to Championship football, he could prove to be one of the smartest and most underrated signings of the summer.
What they still need
Portsmouth would benefit from signing an experienced Championship striker with a proven goalscoring record, while additional pace in defence would also strengthen the squad.
Verdict
Portsmouth should collect plenty of points at Fratton Park, but their season is likely to be decided by what they achieve away from home.
They have a well-organised team, a clear identity and one of the division’s best home atmospheres. I expect them to spend much of the campaign looking over their shoulders, but I believe they will ultimately do enough to secure another season in the Championship.
