Why I think Charlton will be relegated
Charlton survived with a 19th-place finish last season, but I do not believe this summer’s transfer business has made them significantly stronger.
Billy Koumetio, Karlan Grant and Danny McNamara have arrived, but several important players have also left the club. Looking at the squad as a whole, I am not convinced Charlton have taken a meaningful step forward.
Karlan Grant is undoubtedly the standout signing. He has the quality and experience to score goals at Championship level, while Danny McNamara should provide greater stability and know-how.
Billy Koumetio is an exciting addition with considerable potential, but he still needs to prove that he can perform consistently throughout a demanding 46-match season.
Strengths
Charlton have already shown that they can be difficult opponents, particularly at home. They compete hard, remain committed and rarely allow teams to beat them comfortably.
Karlan Grant could make the difference in several tight matches. Should he rediscover his best form and deliver goals consistently, Charlton will have a much stronger chance of staying in the division.
They also possess a core of players who understand what is required in a survival battle. That resilience could prove valuable when results are poor and pressure begins to build.

I still believe the squad lacks quality compared with several of Charlton’s direct rivals.
The defensive changes leave some significant questions, while the team appears heavily dependent on Grant producing goals regularly. Should he struggle for form or fitness, it is difficult to see where enough goals will come from.
Squad depth is another concern. The Championship is a long and physically demanding competition, and injuries or a loss of form among key players could prove extremely costly.
Charlton survived last season, but standing still is rarely enough in this division. Several of the teams around them appear to have strengthened more convincingly.

Karlan Grant
Grant must reach double figures if Charlton are to have a realistic chance of staying up. He knows the level, can lead the attack and possesses the finishing ability required to decide close matches. Much of Charlton’s survival challenge may depend on whether he can remain fit and consistently deliver in front of goal.
One to watch
Billy Koumetio
Koumetio has considerable potential, but this season will show whether he is ready to become a dependable Championship centre-back.
He has the physical attributes to succeed, although consistency, concentration and adaptation to the league’s intensity will be crucial.
Best signing
Karlan Grant
Grant is a player who knows the Championship and can provide the attacking quality Charlton lacked during periods of last season.
A reliable goalscorer can transform a relegation battle, and Grant gives them a genuine match-winner in the final third.
What they need
Charlton still need an experienced centre-back, more creativity in midfield and another goalscorer capable of easing the burden on Grant.
Adding those three elements would provide greater balance and improve their chances of surviving another difficult season.
Verdict
Charlton managed to stay in the Championship last season, but I expect the competition to be even tougher this time around.
Several clubs around them have strengthened more substantially, and I am not convinced Charlton have done enough to make the progress required. Grant could win them important points, while Koumetio may develop into an excellent defender, but too much appears dependent on a small number of players delivering consistently.
I expect Charlton to remain competitive and take their survival fight deep into the season. However, I believe their lack of depth and overall squad quality will ultimately leave them below the relegation line.
My prediction is 22nd place and relegation to League One.
