The knockout rounds bring a different kind of tension. Group-stage slip-ups can often be repaired, but from this point onwards, one bad afternoon sends you home.

For the United States, the stakes feel even greater. Playing a World Cup on home soil inevitably brings expectation, and Mauricio Pochettino’s side have done enough to convince supporters that this could become their deepest tournament run in a generation. Bosnia-Herzegovina, however, arrive with nothing to lose after already exceeding most predictions by reaching the last 32.

USA have rediscovered their identity

The defeat to Turkey on the final matchday did little to dampen the mood around the American camp. With qualification already secured, Pochettino rotated heavily and paid the price, but the performances that mattered had already been delivered. Convincing victories over Paraguay and Australia showcased a team prepared to play on the front foot, pressing aggressively and attacking with far greater confidence than previous American sides at major tournaments.

That proactive approach has become the defining feature of this squad. Christian Pulisic continues to dictate attacks whenever he finds space between the lines, while Folarin Balogun has given the Americans a genuine penalty-box presence. Around them, Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie provide the intensity that allows the United States to sustain pressure for long spells.

The challenge now is coping with expectation. Home crowds can inspire, but they can also become impatient if the breakthrough does not arrive quickly.

Bosnia have already exceeded expectations

There is a refreshing freedom about Bosnia-Herzegovina’s campaign. Few expected Sergej Barbarez’s side to emerge from a group containing Switzerland and Canada after their difficult qualification cycle, yet four points proved enough to extend their stay in North America.

The journey has not always been smooth. Switzerland exposed defensive weaknesses during a heavy defeat, but Bosnia responded exactly as knockout hopefuls should by producing a composed display against Qatar when their tournament was on the line.

That resilience says plenty about this group. Edin Džeko may no longer dominate games physically as he once did, but his movement and experience remain invaluable, while the younger players around him have gradually grown into the tournament. Bosnia will not seek to monopolise possession here. Instead, they are likely to defend compactly, frustrate the hosts and wait for moments to counter. That strategy could make this a far tighter contest than many anticipate.

Team news

The United States will monitor the fitness of Christian Roldan, Mark McKenzie and Auston Trusty, although none of the trio are guaranteed starters. Pochettino is expected to recall his strongest XI, with Pulisic, Balogun, McKennie, Tyler Adams and Antonee Robinson all returning after rotation against Turkey.

Bosnia welcome Tarik Muharemović back from suspension, strengthening a defence that will need to withstand prolonged spells of pressure. Amar Dedić remains a doubt because of a thigh problem, while veteran captain Džeko is once again expected to spearhead the attack.

Verdict

This feels like one of those knockout ties where patience will become the decisive quality. Bosnia are disciplined enough to make life uncomfortable and possess enough experience to avoid being overwhelmed by the occasion. If they can keep the match level into the final half-hour, belief will inevitably grow.

The United States, though, have looked more dynamic throughout the tournament. Their pressing has unsettled opponents, their attacking combinations have improved with every match and playing in front of a home crowd remains a significant advantage.

It may not be spectacular, but the co-hosts look capable of finding the decisive moment that books their place in the last 16.

Tip: USA to win.
