Bodø/Glimt return to the UEFA Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday with another opportunity to prove they belong among Europe’s emerging elite, but standing in their way is a Union Saint-Gilloise side that has quickly become one of Belgium’s strongest clubs.

The third qualifying round brings together two teams whose reputations have grown considerably over recent seasons. Union have gone from fairytale domestic champions to regular European participants, while Bodø/Glimt continue to establish themselves as Norway’s standard-bearers on the continental stage after another impressive Champions League campaign last season.

Neither side will view this as a tie to simply survive. Both have genuine ambitions of reaching the league phase, making the opening leg in Brussels one of the standout fixtures of this qualifying round.

Union are determined to return to the Champions League

Winning the Belgian title in 2025 transformed Union Saint-Gilloise’s ambitions, and last season showed they were capable of competing at Champions League level.

Although they narrowly missed out on the knockout phase, David Hubert’s side proved they could trouble established European opponents, missing qualification by the finest of margins after collecting three victories during the league phase.

That experience should serve them well this time around. Union enter the tie having already lifted silverware, defeating Club Brugge on penalties to win the Belgian Super Cup after another disciplined display. Their preparations were equally encouraging, with five victories from six pre-season friendlies suggesting the squad has quickly adapted despite several important departures.

Replacing influential figures such as Kjell Scherpen and Christian Burgess presents an obvious challenge, but the early signs have been positive. Kevin Mac Allister continues to anchor the defence, while Promise David remains the focal point in attack after another prolific campaign in front of goal.

Playing the first leg at home, Union will want to establish control early. They are unlikely to overwhelm Bodø/Glimt through relentless possession, but their organisation and ability to exploit transitions have become defining characteristics under Hubert.

Bodø/Glimt arrive with confidence and valuable European experience

Few clubs outside Europe’s traditional powers have progressed as quickly as Bodø/Glimt. Their run to the Champions League round of 16 last season confirmed that Norwegian football’s recent rise is no coincidence, and Kjetil Knutsen’s squad now approaches these occasions with genuine belief rather than underdog mentality.

Domestic form only strengthens that confidence. Five consecutive Eliteserien victories without conceding have lifted Glimt back to the top of the table, while Friday’s commanding 4-0 victory over Lillestrøm demonstrated that the attacking fluency remains intact despite Kasper Høgh’s summer departure.

Losing their leading goalscorer inevitably alters the dynamic of the forward line, but Bodø/Glimt have rarely relied on one individual. Ole Blomberg has settled quickly, Jens Petter Hauge continues to influence matches from wide areas, and Patrick Berg remains the player who dictates both tempo and rhythm from midfield.

The visitors do travel without several injured players, including Håkon Evjen and Ulrik Saltnes, but Knutsen has repeatedly shown an ability to maintain performance levels regardless of personnel.

Perhaps the biggest advantage Bodø/Glimt carry into this tie is familiarity. Knockout football has become second nature over recent seasons, and they understand better than most that the opening leg is about remaining firmly in contention rather than forcing the issue.

Verdict

There is very little to separate these teams. Union possess home advantage, arrive with confidence after lifting the Belgian Super Cup and have become exceptionally difficult opponents on their own ground. Bodø/Glimt, meanwhile, have built an impressive European pedigree and look every bit as convincing as they did during last season’s Champions League campaign.

Expect a tactical contest where neither side is willing to take unnecessary risks before next week’s return leg in Norway. Small details could ultimately decide the tie, but there is every chance both teams will leave Belgium believing qualification remains within reach.
