By the time Turkey and Paraguay take to the field in San Francisco, both will already know the stakes. Defeat would leave qualification hopes hanging by the thinnest of threads, while victory would breathe life back into campaigns that stumbled badly at the first hurdle.

The circumstances of those defeats were very different. Turkey dominated large stretches against Australia yet somehow emerged empty-handed, while Paraguay were overwhelmed by the United States before recovering too late to alter the outcome. Both sides will feel they have something to prove, making this one of the most intriguing fixtures of the second round.

Analysis

Turkey Must Convert Control Into Results

Turkey’s defeat to Australia was one of the most frustrating performances of the opening round. Vincenzo Montella’s side controlled possession, pinned their opponents back for extended periods and generated enough opportunities to win comfortably. Yet for all their territorial dominance, they lacked the clinical edge required to turn superiority into goals.

That failure will concern Montella more than the result itself. The encouraging news is that Turkey’s overall structure remains intact. They moved the ball well, created chances from multiple areas and consistently found routes into dangerous positions. Had even a fraction of those opportunities been converted, the conversation surrounding their tournament prospects would look very different.

The challenge now is avoiding frustration. Teams that feel hard done by can easily become impatient in the following match, particularly when another defeat would leave them on the brink of elimination.

Turkey’s attacking quality remains among the strongest in the group. Arda Guler continues to be the creative heartbeat of the side, Hakan Calhanoglu provides leadership and control, while the potential involvement of Kenan Yildiz offers another route to goal should his fitness allow a greater role.

The performance against Australia was not the display of a poor team. It was the display of a team that failed to take its chances.

Paraguay Need A Stronger Foundation

Paraguay’s problems were very different. Where Turkey controlled their opener without scoring, Paraguay struggled to gain a foothold at all. The United States exposed defensive weaknesses rarely seen during Gustavo Alfaro’s tenure and effectively decided the contest before half-time.

That will have been particularly frustrating given the identity Alfaro has built. Paraguay’s qualification campaign was founded on organisation, discipline and an ability to make life uncomfortable for opponents. Against the Americans, those qualities were largely absent during the opening period, leaving the team chasing the game rather than dictating its rhythm.

The response after the interval offered some encouragement. Paraguay looked more compact, more aggressive and more like the side that earned notable results during qualification. Mauricio’s goal gave them a foothold, but the damage had already been done.

That second-half improvement may prove important heading into Friday’s fixture. Julio Enciso remains the key figure creatively, while Miguel Almiron provides the experience and direct running required to stretch defences. If Paraguay can restore their defensive structure, they possess enough quality to trouble Turkey on the counter-attack.

The Psychological Battle Could Be Decisive

Few matches in the group stage carry greater psychological significance than this one. Turkey enter the game feeling they should already have three points. Paraguay enter knowing they were fortunate not to suffer an even heavier defeat against the United States.

Those contrasting emotions could shape the contest. Turkey are likely to take the initiative, trusting the process that created so many opportunities against Australia. Paraguay may be more cautious, prioritising stability and attempting to draw Turkey into mistakes.

The danger for Montella’s side is becoming predictable if frustration starts to build. The danger for Paraguay is allowing Turkey too much control and spending long periods pinned inside their own half. Whoever handles the pressure better may ultimately decide the outcome.

Verdict

Turkey’s defeat to Australia was damaging, but the underlying performance contained enough positives to suggest they remain one of the stronger sides in Group D. The same cannot quite be said for Paraguay, whose defensive vulnerabilities were exposed repeatedly by the United States.

Alfaro’s men should be more competitive this time, but Turkey’s creativity and attacking depth give them a clear advantage if they can maintain their composure.

Tip

Turkey to win.

Expect a tighter contest than either side experienced in the opening round, but Turkey’s ability to create chances and the urgency generated by their disappointing defeat to Australia should be enough to secure a crucial three points.
