Slovan Bratislava return to Tehelné Pole on Tuesday with a 2-1 advantage over Mjällby AIF and a place in the Champions League playoff round within reach.

The Slovakian champions had to come from behind in Sweden last week, with Suleiman Camara cancelling out Elliot Stroud’s penalty before Manasse Kianga struck the late winner. Mjällby must now respond away from home at a time when their domestic form has deteriorated sharply, while Slovan have made an impressive start under Yaya Touré.

The winners will advance to face either Ararat-Armenia or Celje in the final qualifying round before the league phase.

Slovan growing into life under Yaya Touré

Slovan’s decision to hand Touré his first senior managerial position represented an intriguing move, but the early results have been difficult to argue with.

Four victories and a draw from his opening five competitive matches have given the former Manchester City midfielder an excellent start, with Slovan also beginning their pursuit of an eighth consecutive Slovakian league title with a victory.

Their European results have been equally encouraging.

Slovan won away against Iberia 1999 in the previous qualifying round before completing the job at home, and they again produced an important result on their travels against Mjällby. Falling behind shortly after the hour mark could have changed the complexion of the tie, but the response was impressive.

Camara made an immediate impact from the bench with a goal and an assist on his debut, while fellow substitute Kianga completed the turnaround with the winner. Both have consequently strengthened their cases for starting roles on Tuesday.

The numbers at Tehelné Pole also favour the hosts. Slovan have won six of their last seven Champions League qualifiers there, and another strong home performance would move them within one tie of returning to the league phase after their 2024-25 appearance.

Nino Marcelli and Andraz Sporar remain unavailable, while Tigran Barseghyan is a doubt, but Touré still has enough attacking options to cause Mjällby significant problems.

Mjällby need to rediscover their winning touch

Mjällby’s first European campaign is still alive, but their overall form gives Karl Marius Aksum plenty to think about.

The Swedish champions responded to their first-leg defeat by losing 1-0 at home to Elfsborg on Saturday, extending their winless run to four matches and leaving them down in 12th place in the Allsvenskan.

More concerning is the wider trend. Mjällby’s 3-0 victory over Lincoln Red Imps in the previous Champions League round is their only win from their last 11 competitive fixtures. Five of the other 10 have ended in defeat, and they have also gone five consecutive away matches without a victory.

Goals have become increasingly difficult to find. Mjällby have scored only twice across their last four matches, with both coming through Stroud, including his penalty against Slovan.

The visitors therefore need others to provide a greater threat in Bratislava. They cannot simply protect their shape and wait for opportunities as they might have done with the scores level; at some stage, Mjällby must take risks to overturn the aggregate deficit. That could leave precisely the spaces Slovan will look to exploit.

Verdict

Mjällby have already achieved plenty by reaching the third qualifying round in their first European campaign, but recent performances suggest that extending the adventure in the Champions League will require a major improvement.

Slovan have started strongly under Touré, possess the aggregate advantage and have an excellent recent record at home in Champions League qualifying. Their ability to respond after falling behind in Sweden also demonstrated the attacking options available to their new manager.

Mjällby should have moments where they threaten, particularly through Stroud, but the hosts look capable of creating enough chances to win the second leg as well as the tie.
