Serbia and the Netherlands meet in Belgrade after very different opening performances in the Nations League. Serbia suffered a late defeat against Greece, while the Netherlands rescued a draw against Germany in Xavi Hernández’s first match as national team coach.

The home crowd should make this a difficult away match, but the Netherlands have more quality across the pitch and arrive with a squad capable of taking control.

Serbia look to respond after home defeat

Serbia began their campaign with a 2–1 defeat against Greece at the Rajko Mitić Stadium. The match appeared to be heading towards a draw before Tasos Douvikas scored the winner late in the game.

The hosts had opportunities to take something from the match, with Saša Lukić hitting the post shortly before Greece scored their second goal. It was a close contest, but Serbia were unable to protect themselves during the decisive moments.

Another home match gives Serbia an immediate opportunity to respond. They should be aggressive in front of their own supporters, but that approach could leave space for the pace and movement in the Dutch attack.

Netherlands start a new period under Xavi

The Netherlands opened their Nations League campaign with a 1–1 draw against Germany. Felix Nmecha gave Germany the lead before Cody Gakpo scored a late volley to earn the Netherlands a point.

It was the first match under Xavi Hernández, who has asked his team to play with more intensity and take greater control of matches. The draw against Germany was a solid start against strong opposition, even if the performance was not perfect.

Xavi has plenty of quality available. Virgil van Dijk remains captain, while Denzel Dumfries, Jeremie Frimpong, Ryan Gravenberch, Tijjani Reijnders and Gakpo give the visitors strength in every area.

Memphis Depay was left out of the squad, but the Netherlands still have several attacking options including Donyell Malen, Brian Brobbey, Noa Lang and Justin Kluivert.

Netherlands should create the better chances

Serbia should make the match competitive, especially during the opening stages. However, their defeat against Greece showed that they can be vulnerable when matches become stretched.

The Netherlands have the midfield quality to control possession and enough pace to attack the spaces Serbia leave behind. If the visitors score first, Serbia will need to push further forward and give Gakpo, Malen and the Dutch wing-backs more room.

Verdict

The Netherlands are the stronger team and should build on their draw against Germany. Serbia will benefit from playing at home, but the visitors have more quality and should create the better chances.

The Asian handicap gives the stake back if the Netherlands win by exactly one goal. A victory by two or more goals gives us the win.
