There is no margin for error when Senegal face Iraq in their final Group I fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Lions of Teranga know that only victory at BMO Field will give them any realistic chance of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after a disappointing start to the competition.

Iraq are also clinging to faint hopes of reaching the knockout stages, although their heavy defeats in the opening two matches have left them relying on an unlikely combination of results elsewhere. With both nations fighting to extend their stay in North America, Friday’s encounter carries significant weight despite neither side being able to finish in the top two.

Can Senegal finally deliver?

Expectations were considerably higher for Senegal heading into the tournament. Drawn alongside heavyweight opponents in France and an in-form Norway side spearheaded by Erling Haaland, the African champions were still widely fancied to collect enough points to progress.

Instead, Pape Thiaw’s men have been their own worst enemies. They competed well for long periods against France before being punished by the individual brilliance of Kylian Mbappe, while a catalogue of defensive errors ultimately proved costly in a 3-2 defeat to Norway.

Those defensive frailties are now becoming a genuine concern. Senegal have conceded three goals in three of their last four matches across all competitions, and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been ruled out with a knee injury, further weakening a back line already lacking confidence. Captain Kalidou Koulibaly endured a particularly difficult evening against Norway and faces competition from Mamadou Sarr and Abdoulaye Seck, although his experience may still earn him another start.

Going forward, there is enough quality to trouble Iraq. Sadio Mane remains the focal point despite yet to hit top form in the tournament, while Ismaila Sarr rediscovered his sharpness against Norway and Nicolas Jackson continues to offer pace and movement across the front line. If Senegal produce the attacking display many expected before the tournament, they should create plenty of opportunities.

Iraq’s World Cup dream fading

Simply reaching the World Cup represented a major achievement for Iraq, who are appearing at the finals for the first time since 1986. Graham Arnold has worked to make his side competitive against stronger opposition, but the step up in class has been evident throughout Group I.

Heavy defeats to Norway and France have left Iraq rooted to the bottom of the standings with a goal difference that could ultimately prove impossible to overcome. Even victory here may not be enough to keep their campaign alive.

Injuries have also complicated matters. Leading scorer Aymen Hussein, whose eight qualifying goals helped Iraq reach the finals, is doubtful after being forced off early in the defeat to France. Should he miss out, Arnold may hand Mohanad Ali his first World Cup start alongside Ali Al-Hamadi in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the attack.

Despite their difficult campaign, Iraq have shown flashes of resilience in recent months, including a commendable draw with Spain before the tournament. However, they have struggled to create sustained attacking pressure against elite opponents, and facing a Senegal side desperate for three points represents another significant challenge.

Verdict

Neither side has lived up to expectations in Group I, but Senegal possess considerably greater quality across the pitch and know exactly what is required. Defensive vulnerabilities mean they are unlikely to have everything their own way, particularly with Iraq still playing for pride and a slim chance of qualification.

Nevertheless, the Lions of Teranga should have enough firepower to finally record their first win of the tournament. Whether it proves sufficient to secure a place in the last 32 will depend on events elsewhere, but they look well placed to end the group stage on a positive note.
