For all the talent still scattered across both squads, this feels like a meeting between two nations fully aware that opportunities like this do not come around forever.

Portugal have spent the last decade assembling one of the strongest generations in their history without capturing football’s biggest prize. Croatia, meanwhile, have repeatedly defied expectations on the World Cup stage, turning resilience into an identity despite a golden generation edging towards its final chapter. Only one of them will still be standing after Toronto.

Portugal still have another gear to find

Portugal reached the knockout rounds without ever looking entirely convincing. The opening draw with DR Congo exposed a lack of attacking fluency, while the goalless stalemate against Colombia showed that Roberto Martínez’s side can still struggle when opponents disrupt their rhythm and deny space between the lines.

Yet there were also reminders of why Portugal remain genuine contenders. The 5-0 dismantling of Uzbekistan showcased the devastating quality available when everything clicks. Bruno Fernandes dictated the tempo, João Félix found pockets of space, and Cristiano Ronaldo reminded everyone that age has done little to diminish his instinct inside the penalty area.

That blend of experience and technical quality makes Portugal dangerous in knockout football. Martínez has also managed his squad intelligently throughout the group stage, rotating regularly without disrupting cohesion. Fresh legs in midfield could prove particularly important against a Croatian side built around controlling possession.

Portugal know this draw has become considerably more difficult after finishing behind Colombia, but they also know that championship-winning teams rarely enjoy comfortable routes through a World Cup.

Croatia rarely beat themselves

Croatia continue to produce tournament football that reflects their character. There is rarely anything spectacular about Zlatko Dalić’s side over 90 minutes, but they remain one of the hardest teams in international football to eliminate. They defend with discipline, slow games down whenever necessary and possess enough technical quality in midfield to frustrate almost any opponent.

Their recovery after losing heavily to England demonstrated exactly that. Victories over Panama and Ghana secured another knockout appearance, with Luka Modrić once again proving decisive despite approaching his 41st birthday. His assist against Ghana was another reminder that intelligence often outlasts athleticism.

Croatia will also draw confidence from their recent World Cup pedigree. A runners-up finish in 2018 and third place in Qatar established a mentality that cannot be measured by FIFA rankings alone. They have consistently produced their best football when the pressure is greatest.

The concern for Dalić is whether his side possess enough attacking threat to punish Portugal if opportunities become scarce. Croatia have looked organised throughout the tournament, but they have not consistently created chances against elite opposition.

Team news

Portugal reported no fresh injury concerns after the draw with Colombia, leaving Martínez with the luxury of selection rather than necessity. João Neves is expected to return alongside Vitinha in midfield, while Cristiano Ronaldo continues to lead the attack, supported by Bruno Fernandes. Nuno Mendes, Rúben Dias and João Cancelo are all expected to return after rotation during the group stage.

Croatia also arrive with a healthy squad. Joško Gvardiol is likely to return at left-back after being rested against Ghana, allowing Ivan Perišić to move back into a more advanced role. Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić should again anchor midfield, while Nikola Vlašić has strengthened his case for a starting place after scoring the winner in the final group match.

Verdict

This has all the ingredients of a classic knockout tie. Croatia have repeatedly shown they can frustrate technically superior opponents, while Portugal have occasionally lacked the fluency expected of one of the tournament favourites. It would be no surprise if this remained level deep into the second half.

Ultimately, though, Portugal appear to have slightly more variety in attack. Bruno Fernandes’ creativity, Ronaldo’s movement inside the area and the energy of players such as Vitinha and Nuno Mendes give Martínez’s side multiple ways of unlocking disciplined defences. Croatia will make them work for every opening, but Portugal look marginally better equipped to seize the decisive moment.

Tip: Portugal to win.
