Omonia return to UEFA Champions League qualifying on Wednesday evening when they host Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie.

Both clubs arrive as reigning domestic champions and harbour genuine ambitions of reaching the league phase, making this one of the standout ties of the round. Omonia are looking to take another step forward after establishing themselves as regular participants in UEFA competition, while Kairat hope to build on last season’s historic Champions League appearance.

With both sides carrying impressive unbeaten or winning runs into the contest, the opening leg in Nicosia promises to be a fascinating battle.

Omonia looking to continue impressive upward trajectory

Winning the Cypriot First Division by an 18-point margin represented a major statement from Omonia, who reclaimed the domestic crown for the first time in five years and earned another opportunity to compete for a place among Europe’s elite.

Henning Berg has transformed the club into one capable of consistently challenging in UEFA competitions. Although the Champions League league phase has so far remained out of reach, Omonia have reached the Conference League proper in each of the past two seasons and now appear better equipped to make another serious European run.

The Cypriot champions head into Wednesday’s encounter without a competitive fixture since lifting the title, but pre-season has provided encouraging signs. They remain unbeaten across their last 17 matches in all competitions, including friendlies, and have regularly demonstrated their attacking quality by scoring at least twice in 14 of those outings.

Summer signing Andronikos Kakoullis has settled quickly after scoring twice against Panetolikos in Omonia’s latest warm-up match and could be rewarded with a starting berth. Experienced goalkeeper Fabiano is expected to continue between the posts, while Ioannis Kousoulos may strengthen the midfield from the outset.

Kairat arrive with momentum and European belief

Few teams entering this round possess as much momentum as Kairat Almaty.

Rafael Urazbakhtin’s side have already negotiated the opening qualifying round by comfortably defeating Sutjeska 4-1 on aggregate before continuing their excellent domestic form with another convincing league victory at the weekend.

Seven consecutive victories in all competitions underline the confidence currently flowing through the Kazakh champions. Even more impressive has been their attacking consistency, with Kairat scoring at least twice in every match during that winning sequence.

Last season’s participation in the Champions League league phase provided invaluable experience, even if results proved difficult against Europe’s elite. That campaign has undoubtedly raised expectations within the club, and there is every indication that Kairat are capable of competing with established European opponents once again.

The visitors are boosted by the return of Aleksandr Martynovich and Jaakko Oksanen after suspension, while Jorginho, Marc Gual and the in-form Edmilson offer plenty of attacking threat. Having won their last four away matches, Kairat travel to Cyprus believing they can leave themselves in a strong position ahead of the return leg in Almaty.

Verdict: Fine margins expected

There is little to separate these two champions heading into the first leg. Omonia possess home advantage and have built impressive consistency under Henning Berg, while Kairat arrive battle-hardened after already navigating one qualifying round and maintaining an outstanding winning streak.

Both sides have shown enough attacking quality in recent weeks to suggest chances will come at either end, but neither will want to hand a significant advantage to their opponents before next week’s decisive second leg. A closely contested draw would leave everything to play for in Kazakhstan.
