Group I reaches its decisive moment at Gillette Stadium on Friday, with Norway and France both already through but still fighting for the route they want into the knockout rounds. Six points from two matches has given each side breathing room, yet first place remains very much alive.

For Norway, this is a chance to turn an impressive return to the World Cup into a genuine statement. For France, it is about control, authority and maintaining the sense that Didier Deschamps’ side are once again built for the latter stages of this tournament.

Norway have earned their moment

Norway arrived at their first World Cup in 28 years with plenty of intrigue, but they have quickly turned promise into points. A 4-1 win over Iraq gave Stale Solbakken’s side the perfect start, before a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Senegal confirmed their place in the knockout phase.

The headline figure is inevitably Erling Haaland. Four goals in two matches has made him one of the tournament’s early stars, and Norway’s directness, speed and willingness to attack space have given him exactly the kind of service he thrives on.

The concern is that Norway have still allowed opponents chances. Senegal pushed them hard, and France will be far less forgiving if similar gaps appear between midfield and defence. Julian Ryerson’s injury also leaves Solbakken with a defensive decision to make, with Marcus Pedersen expected to step in.

Still, Norway have played with belief rather than caution. They may not need to win to progress, but beating France would change the entire tone of their tournament.

France look ready for another long run

France have not been flawless, but they have looked powerful, efficient and increasingly comfortable. A 3-1 win over Senegal required Kylian Mbappe to settle a difficult contest, while the 3-0 victory over Iraq was more controlled from start to finish.

Mbappe has already taken command of the tournament narrative. With four goals from two matches, he looks sharp, ruthless and fully capable of carrying France through tight games, but Deschamps also has depth around him. Bradley Barcola has added pace and invention, while Desire Doue offers another option if France want more unpredictability in the final third.

There are selection questions elsewhere. Manu Kone and Lucas Digne both strengthened their cases after impressing against Iraq, while Aurelien Tchouameni and Theo Hernandez remain difficult players to leave out. That level of competition is precisely what makes France so dangerous.

The key difference may be control. Norway can hurt France, especially in transition, but Les Bleus have the midfield structure and tournament experience to manage the moments when the game becomes stretched.

Verdict

This has all the ingredients of one of the standout group-stage matches. Norway have shown they can compete with anyone going forward, while France have once again demonstrated the balance and tournament know-how that has made them perennial contenders.

Neither side will want to surrender momentum before the knockout rounds, but equally there is little incentive to overcommit and leave themselves exposed. Expect a competitive contest with chances at both ends, but one where the two teams largely cancel each other out.
