New Zealand and Egypt left their opening World Cup matches with mixed emotions. Both sides showed enough quality to believe they can challenge for a place in the knockout rounds, yet both also watched victories slip from their grasp. That leaves Sunday’s meeting in Vancouver carrying genuine significance.
A win would put either nation in a strong position heading into the final round of group games, while another draw could leave qualification dependent on events elsewhere. Neither side has ever won a World Cup match. One of them now has a chance to change that.
Analysis
New Zealand Have Already Exceeded Expectations
There was a sense before the tournament that New Zealand’s hopes rested almost entirely on Chris Wood. The Nottingham Forest striker remains the face of the national team, but the draw against Iran demonstrated that the All Whites are more than a one-man operation. Elijah Just produced the performance of his international career, while New Zealand looked far more adventurous than many expected from a side returning to the World Cup after a lengthy absence.
What will encourage Darren Bazeley most is that his players never looked overwhelmed by the occasion. Twice they took the lead and, for long stretches, carried a genuine threat going forward.
The frustration is obvious. A stronger defensive display would have delivered all three points and transformed the mood around the squad.
Even so, New Zealand can take confidence from the fact they looked capable of competing at this level. The challenge now is proving that performance was not a one-off.
Egypt Need To Turn Promise Into Points
Egypt’s draw with Belgium felt different from many of their previous World Cup disappointments. Rather than simply hanging on against a stronger opponent, the Pharaohs caused Belgium problems throughout the contest and could easily have finished the night with a famous victory. Their approach was disciplined without being passive, and there were encouraging signs that the attack is no longer entirely dependent on Mohamed Salah.
That may prove vital. Salah remains Egypt’s biggest star and most dangerous player, but the modern version of this team looks more varied in possession than previous generations. Emam Ashour’s goal against Belgium was evidence of that, while several others found promising positions throughout the match.
The challenge for Hossam Hassan is ensuring the performance is backed up by a result. For all their success in African football, Egypt’s World Cup history remains surprisingly thin. The opportunity to secure a first-ever victory at the tournament will not be lost on anyone inside the camp.
Different Strengths, Same Objective
This match feels less like a battle between favourites and outsiders and more like a test of which side can build on an encouraging start.
New Zealand will fancy their chances of unsettling Egypt physically and creating opportunities through direct attacks. Egypt are likely to enjoy more of the ball and may feel they possess the greater quality in key areas.
Neither side is likely to abandon its identity. That should create a match where moments of quality become decisive. Both teams demonstrated attacking promise in their opening fixtures, but they also revealed defensive flaws that opponents will be eager to exploit.
The side that learns quickest from those mistakes may be the one that leaves Vancouver with three precious points.
Verdict
New Zealand deserve enormous credit for the way they approached their opener and should arrive with plenty of belief.
However, Egypt looked convincing against stronger opposition and appeared to possess a little more composure when opportunities presented themselves. If they can reproduce that level and show greater ruthlessness in front of goal, this could finally be the day they secure a long-awaited World Cup win.
Tip
Egypt to win.
