Morocco arrived in North America determined to prove that their run to the World Cup semi-finals four years ago was not a once-in-a-generation anomaly. Two matches into the tournament, they have given themselves every opportunity to do exactly that.
The Atlas Lions head into Wednesday’s meeting with Haiti knowing that victory would remove any dependence on events elsewhere and secure their place in the knockout rounds. Haiti, meanwhile, are playing for something altogether different. Their World Cup journey will end after this match regardless of the outcome, but there remains pride, reputation and history at stake.
Analysis
Morocco beginning to look like contenders
Few teams have looked more assured through the opening two rounds than Morocco. A draw against Brazil was followed by a disciplined and mature victory over Scotland, a performance that showcased qualities beyond the technical ability already associated with this generation of Moroccan players. They controlled possession, dictated the tempo and rarely allowed Scotland to establish any rhythm.
What has perhaps been most impressive is the balance within the side. Achraf Hakimi continues to drive the team forward from full-back, Brahim Diaz offers creativity between the lines and Ismael Saibari has emerged as one of the most influential attacking players in the group stage. Behind them, Morocco remain exceptionally difficult to break down.
Their unbeaten run now stretches beyond thirty matches, a statistic that reflects consistency rather than luck. They no longer arrive at major tournaments hoping to surprise opponents. They arrive expecting to compete with them.
Haiti seeking a positive farewell
The scorelines alone do not tell the full story of Haiti’s campaign. Against Scotland they stayed competitive throughout and were unfortunate not to take something from the contest. The defeat to Brazil was more decisive, but there were periods where they showed courage in possession and a willingness to attack rather than simply defend deep.
The problem has been at the sharp end of the pitch. Haiti have yet to score in the tournament and have struggled to convert promising moments into genuine opportunities. Against Morocco they are likely to spend long periods without the ball, making efficiency in transition absolutely crucial.
With elimination already confirmed, there is at least a possibility that the pressure disappears. Teams in Haiti’s position can become dangerous because they have little reason to be cautious. Whether they possess enough quality to trouble one of the tournament’s strongest defensive units is another question entirely.
Verdict
Morocco have looked organised, confident and increasingly comfortable as the tournament has progressed. They know exactly what is required and possess considerably more quality across the pitch than their opponents.
Haiti should compete with greater freedom than in their previous two matches and may create moments of danger on the counter-attack. Over ninety minutes, though, Morocco’s control, patience and attacking variety ought to tell.
The Atlas Lions have spent the last few years proving that they belong among football’s elite. Wednesday presents another opportunity to reinforce that message.
Tip
Morocco to win and keep a clean sheet.
