Mexico’s dream start to the 2026 World Cup has earned them home advantage for another night in front of a passionate crowd at Mexico City Stadium, but the knockout rounds rarely follow the script.

Javier Aguirre’s side have yet to concede a goal and arrive with maximum points from Group A, while Ecuador earned their place in the last 32 the hard way, producing one of the tournament’s biggest surprises by overturning Germany in their final group match.

Mexico thriving under the spotlight

Few teams have handled the pressure of a home World Cup as impressively as Mexico. Three wins, three clean sheets and six goals scored have transformed optimism into genuine belief that El Tri can finally break their long-standing knockout ceiling. More importantly, they have shown different ways of winning.

The opening victory over South Africa showcased attacking quality, the narrow success against South Korea highlighted their defensive discipline, while the convincing win over Czech Republic demonstrated their ability to control a game from start to finish.

Aguirre deserves much of the credit. His third spell in charge has produced a side that looks organised without sacrificing attacking intent, and the experience running through the spine of the team has given Mexico an authority they have sometimes lacked at previous World Cups.

Playing in front of more than 80,000 supporters only strengthens that confidence. The atmosphere in Mexico City has become one of the tournament’s defining features, and Ecuador will have to cope with far more than just the quality of the opposition.

Ecuador have already proved they belong

Ecuador’s route to the knockout stage could hardly have been more dramatic. A stoppage-time defeat to Ivory Coast and a frustrating goalless draw against Curaçao left Sebastián Beccacece’s side with little margin for error before facing Germany. Rather than shrink under the pressure, they produced arguably their most complete display in years.

Coming from behind to defeat one of Europe’s strongest teams was not built on luck. Ecuador pressed aggressively, defended with conviction and looked dangerous whenever they attacked the spaces behind Germany’s defence.

That performance will give La Tri genuine confidence heading into another difficult assignment. Unlike some third-placed qualifiers, they arrive believing they can compete with anyone remaining in the tournament.

If Gonzalo Plata can reproduce the form he showed against Germany and Enner Valencia continues to provide leadership in attack, Ecuador have enough quality to make life uncomfortable for the hosts.

Team news

Mexico have no fresh injury concerns, allowing Aguirre to recall several regular starters after rotating against Czech Republic. Raúl Jiménez is expected to return to lead the attack, while the settled back four of Jorge Sánchez, César Montes, Johan Vásquez and Jesús Gallardo should remain unchanged after three consecutive clean sheets.

Ecuador also report a fully fit squad. Beccacece is unlikely to alter the side that defeated Germany, with Gonzalo Plata retaining his place alongside veteran striker Enner Valencia, who sits one goal short of 50 for his country.

Verdict

Knockout football often rewards defensive organisation, and few teams have defended better than Mexico during the group stage.

Ecuador possess enough pace and athleticism to create problems, particularly in transition, but asking them to eliminate Germany and then immediately overcome the tournament hosts in Mexico City may prove a step too far.

The visitors should make this far tighter than many expect, yet Mexico’s structure, confidence and home support give them the edge in what promises to be one of the most competitive ties of the round.

Tip: Mexico to win.
