Leeds United and Newcastle United bring the curtain down on Premier League gameweek four at Elland Road on Monday evening, with both sides still unbeaten in the top flight this season.
Daniel Farke’s men suffered their first defeat of 2026-27 in a remarkable 6-3 EFL Cup loss at Chelsea in midweek, whereas Newcastle progressed with a 1-0 victory over Millwall and remain unbeaten since Matthias Jaissle took charge.
Analysis
Leeds United
Wednesday’s trip to Stamford Bridge demonstrated both the strengths and weaknesses of this Leeds side. The Whites stunned Chelsea by racing into a two-goal advantage, only for Xabi Alonso’s much-changed team to eventually take control and run out 6-3 winners. While conceding six is hardly ideal preparation for Newcastle’s visit, Farke had rotated heavily and can restore most of his regular starters on Monday.
More important to Leeds is their unbeaten Premier League record. Five points from their opening three matches represents an encouraging start, even if last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Brighton felt like an opportunity missed. Jayden Bogle put Leeds ahead before Luka Vuskovic rescued a point for the Seagulls.
Avoiding defeat again would see Leeds complete their first four Premier League fixtures without a loss for the first time since 2001-02.
Their broader league record is equally impressive. Leeds have been beaten only once in their last 12 Premier League matches, although six draws during that sequence illustrate how often they have struggled to turn competitive performances into victories.
One particularly encouraging feature has been their ability to score. Farke’s side have found the net in every competitive match this season, and their aggressive approach without the ball could cause Newcastle problems.
Leeds registered 528 high-intensity pressures in the opposition half across the opening three league rounds, the second-highest figure in the division. That is especially relevant against a Newcastle team that has already faced 61 shots, more than anyone else in the Premier League during the same period.
Farke should revert to something approaching his preferred XI after the cup rotation, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin returning to spearhead the attack. Newcastle have traditionally been favourable opponents for the striker, who has scored seven Premier League goals against them – more than against any other club.
Ilia Gruev could also return following his knee problem, but Joe Rodon faces an extended spell out with a thigh injury and Mateo Joseph remains on the comeback trail after his ACL injury.
Newcastle United
Jaissle’s introduction to English football continues to gather momentum. Newcastle have collected five points from their opening three Premier League matches and added another victory in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, when Joe Willock’s goal was enough to eliminate Millwall.
The Magpies’ league record of one victory and two draws does not quite tell the whole story. They have shown considerable attacking threat and resilience, scoring at least twice in each of their first three top-flight fixtures.
That character was particularly evident against Bournemouth last weekend. Newcastle found themselves two goals behind at St James’ Park but recovered to earn a 2-2 draw and preserve their unbeaten start.
Jaissle now takes his team back on the road, where their first assignment of the season produced victory at Tottenham. Another success would mean Newcastle winning their opening two Premier League away fixtures for the first time since 1995-96.
Recent history against Leeds also favours the visitors. Newcastle are unbeaten in their last six Premier League meetings with the Whites, although January’s extraordinary encounter at St James’ Park demonstrated how little separates these teams when the game becomes stretched.
That match finished 4-3, with Harvey Barnes scoring the winner deep into stoppage time. There are, however, defensive warning signs for Jaissle. No Premier League team allowed opponents more attempts than Newcastle’s 61 across the opening three rounds. Against a Leeds side intent on pressing high and attacking quickly after turnovers, repeatedly surrendering that volume of opportunities would be dangerous.
There is also uncertainty at right-back. Amar Dedic was withdrawn at half time against Millwall after experiencing hamstring discomfort and may not be risked from the start. Tino Livramento is the obvious replacement and could make his first start of the campaign after returning from a knee injury.
Joelinton, Dan Burn and William Osula are expected to remain unavailable until after the international break, while goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen could be closer to returning.
Verdict
There is plenty here to suggest another entertaining meeting. Leeds’ cup collapse at Chelsea should not be given too much weight after Farke rotated his team, and their Premier League performances have provided much more encouragement. Elland Road, their relentless pressing and Newcastle’s tendency to concede chances make the hosts a serious threat.
Newcastle possess greater attacking quality, though, and Jaissle’s team have already demonstrated an ability to recover when matches turn against them.
Neither side has lost in the Premier League this season, and we can see that remaining the case after Monday night. Leeds should have opportunities, but Newcastle have enough quality to respond in what could become another open contest between these sides.
Our prediction: Leeds United 2-2 Newcastle United.
