The battle to avoid relegation takes centre stage in the Eliteserien on Saturday as Kristiansund host fellow strugglers Start at Nordmøre Stadium.

Separated by five points but occupying the bottom two places in the table, both clubs already find themselves under pressure with the campaign approaching its halfway point. Kristiansund have the opportunity to climb out of the relegation places with a victory, while Start know defeat would leave them facing an increasingly difficult task to preserve their top-flight status.

It may only be July, but with every point becoming increasingly valuable, this is already shaping up as one of the most important matches of the season for both sides.

Kristiansund searching for attacking spark at the right time

Kristiansund’s return to the Eliteserien has yet to produce the progress the club had hoped for. After finishing in the bottom half following promotion, Amund Skiri’s side have once again found themselves battling near the foot of the table, with consistency proving elusive throughout the opening months of the campaign.

The biggest concern has been in the final third. No team in the division has scored fewer goals than Kristiansund’s return of just 11 from 13 league matches, and they have failed to score in nearly half of their fixtures this season. Those struggles were evident again last weekend as a goalless draw against Sarpsborg extended their winless league run to four matches.

Yet there are reasons for cautious optimism. All three of Kristiansund’s league victories this season have come when they managed to score at least twice, highlighting their ability to capitalise when confidence begins to flow.

Leander Alvheim remains their most reliable attacking outlet despite a brief goal drought, while the possible return of Tobias Svendsen and Max Williams provides Skiri with additional options after both recently recovered from injury.

Home form has been inconsistent, but facing the weakest away side in the league represents an opportunity Kristiansund cannot afford to waste.

Start running out of time to halt worrying slide

Start’s return to the Eliteserien has quickly become a fight for survival. Azar Karadas has seen his side collect just one league victory all season, leaving the promoted club rooted to the foot of the standings and already chasing the teams above them.

Defensive vulnerability has been at the heart of their problems. Start have conceded more goals than any other side in the division, while their away record has been particularly alarming. One point from eight road matches, combined with 23 goals conceded away from home, illustrates just how difficult life has been outside Kristiansand.

Last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Rosenborg extended a run of three consecutive league defeats and continued a worrying pattern of conceding soft goals against stronger opponents.

Jesper Cornelius remains the visitors’ main attacking threat after scoring four league goals this season, but support has often been lacking, leaving Start unable to convert promising periods of possession into meaningful results.

With Terry Benjamin, Johan Meyer and Kristoffer Tønnessen all unavailable through injury, Karadas has limited scope to freshen up a squad that desperately needs both confidence and points.

Verdict: Kristiansund can capitalise on Start’s away struggles

Neither side arrives in particularly convincing form, but Kristiansund appear better equipped to take advantage of the occasion.

The hosts have struggled to create chances consistently this season, yet they are facing a Start defence that has looked increasingly fragile away from home. While Kristiansund’s own home record is far from convincing, this represents one of their best opportunities to collect three vital points.

Start are capable of making life uncomfortable if they can remain organised, but their defensive record on the road is difficult to ignore. Expect a tense contest, with the home side doing enough to edge a valuable victory.

Tip

Kristiansund to win.
