One of the most evenly matched ties in the round of 32 takes centre stage on Tuesday as Ivory Coast face Norway at Dallas Stadium.
Both nations exceeded pre-tournament expectations to reach the knockout rounds, but they have arrived there by very different routes. Ivory Coast have built their campaign on defensive organisation and patience, while Norway have relied heavily on the remarkable goalscoring exploits of Erling Haaland.
Ivory Coast proving they belong
This is already Ivory Coast’s finest World Cup campaign. Having never previously reached the knockout rounds, Emerse Fae’s side have shown maturity throughout the group stage. A disciplined victory over Ecuador laid the platform before they pushed Germany all the way despite ultimately suffering defeat. They then completed the job with a composed 2-0 win against Curaçao to seal second place.
The Elephants rarely lose their shape, and that has become one of their greatest strengths. They have conceded just twice in three matches, while their front players have produced decisive moments without needing a high volume of chances.
Nicolas Pépé has rediscovered his confidence, Yan Diomande continues to stretch defences with his direct running and Franck Kessié provides the calmness that holds everything together in midfield. Against Norway, that defensive discipline could become their biggest weapon.
Norway know where the goals come from
There has been little mystery surrounding Norway’s route to the knockout stage. Haaland has scored four goals in two starts and once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most feared finishers in world football. His clinical edge proved decisive against both Iraq and Senegal, virtually carrying the Vikings into the last 32.
The concern for Ståle Solbakken is what happened when Haaland was rested against France. Norway struggled to create meaningful opportunities and were comfortably beaten, exposing how dependent they remain on their star striker.
Defensively, there are also lingering questions. Norway have found the net consistently, but clean sheets have been much harder to come by, leaving them vulnerable whenever opponents manage to bypass their first line of pressure. Against a patient Ivory Coast side, they may not receive as many opportunities as they enjoyed during the group stage.
Team news
Ivory Coast remain hopeful Wilfried Singo can recover from his hamstring problem, although Ousmane Diomande and Odilon Kossounou are expected to continue in central defence if he does not make it. Pépé, Diomande and Bonny should once again form the attacking trio.
Norway are monitoring Julian Ryerson after he missed training with a thigh issue. If the Borussia Dortmund defender is unavailable, Fredrik Aursnes could drop into defence, allowing Patrick Berg to start alongside Martin Ødegaard and Sander Berge in midfield. Haaland will spearhead the attack once again.
Verdict
This feels far tighter than the reputations of the two teams might suggest. Ivory Coast possess enough athleticism and defensive structure to frustrate Norway for long spells, while their pace on the counter-attack can expose a back line that has looked vulnerable throughout the tournament.
However, knockout football often hinges on one clinical finish rather than overall control. Few players in world football are more reliable in that situation than Haaland, whose remarkable scoring record for Norway continues to define their campaign.
Tip: Norway to win.
