Hull City have been one of the biggest surprises of the Premier League season so far. Many expected the newly promoted Tigers to struggle against top-flight opposition, but Sergej Jakirović’s side have already shown they are capable of competing with established Premier League clubs.

Their next challenge comes against an Everton team that has yet to taste defeat in the league. David Moyes has built his side around defensive organisation, making the Toffees one of the more difficult teams to break down.

With Hull yet to concede at home and Everton arriving with one of the league’s strongest defensive records, this could become a battle where chances are limited and small details decide the result.

Hull City Have Made an Impressive Return

Hull’s return to the Premier League could hardly have started much better. An opening victory over Manchester United immediately gave supporters reason for optimism, and another win against Coventry City helped establish the Tigers in the top half of the table.

They have collected eight points from their opening five matches, losing only once.

Perhaps their most impressive achievement has been their defensive performances at the MKM Stadium. Hull have kept clean sheets in both home league matches, beating Manchester United 2-0 before holding Aston Villa to a goalless draw.

That defensive resilience has been central to their early success.

However, their recent results suggest the opening momentum has slowed. Hull have gone three league matches without a victory, drawing against Aston Villa and Chelsea before suffering a 2-1 defeat away to Newcastle United.

The Chelsea draw demonstrated their ability to compete against stronger opposition, but the defeat at Newcastle exposed how quickly things can go wrong when they lose concentration defensively.

Jakirović will know that maintaining their unbeaten home record will require another disciplined performance.

Everton’s Defence Has Been Their Biggest Strength

David Moyes has guided Everton through an impressive opening stretch of the season.

The Toffees have recorded two victories and three draws in their opening five Premier League matches, leaving them unbeaten and firmly established in the top half of the table.

Their defensive record stands out immediately.

Everton have conceded just three league goals, and their recent performances suggest that Moyes has found a reliable structure at the back.

A goalless draw away to Tottenham was followed by consecutive 1-0 victories over Wolves in the Carabao Cup and Ipswich Town in the Premier League.

These results highlight a team comfortable playing without taking unnecessary risks. Everton do not need to dominate possession or create endless opportunities to win football matches.

With Jordan Pickford behind a well-organised defensive unit, they have repeatedly shown that protecting a narrow advantage is one of their strengths.

At the other end, Thierno Barry has emerged as an important attacking option, while Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall provide creativity in the final third.

Everton have enough quality to cause Hull problems, but Moyes is unlikely to abandon the cautious approach that has served his team so well.

Two Managers Who Value Defensive Organisation

One of the most interesting aspects of this encounter is the similarity between the two managers.

Both Jakirović and Moyes are comfortable setting their teams up without the ball, focusing on defensive shape and looking to exploit mistakes through quick transitions.

Neither side is particularly dependent on controlling possession.

Hull have demonstrated that they can remain compact against stronger opponents, while Everton have built their unbeaten start on discipline and defensive reliability.

Set pieces could also play an important role. Both teams possess physical players capable of competing in the air, and a well-delivered corner or free kick could make the difference.

This is unlikely to be a match where either manager encourages his players to attack recklessly.

For Hull, avoiding defeat against an unbeaten Everton side would represent another positive result. For Everton, maintaining their strong defensive record while searching for opportunities at the other end will be the priority.

Can Hull Continue Their Home Record?

Hull’s home performances provide one of the most compelling storylines heading into this match.

Keeping clean sheets against Manchester United and Aston Villa is an impressive achievement for a newly promoted team, particularly one that entered the season among the relegation favourites.

Their ability to defend deep, remain organised and frustrate opponents has helped them collect valuable points.

However, Everton present a different challenge.

Moyes’ team is unlikely to become impatient if Hull defend in numbers. The visitors have already shown they are comfortable waiting for the right opportunity rather than forcing the game.

That could produce a contest where both teams spend long periods attempting to break down a compact defensive structure.

Hull will also need to be careful when committing players forward. Everton have the attacking quality to punish mistakes, particularly if the hosts leave space behind their defensive line.

The first goal could prove decisive. If Everton take the lead, Hull may find it extremely difficult to break down a team that has conceded so few goals.

Equally, if Hull score first, their excellent home defensive record suggests they are capable of protecting that advantage.

Verdict

Hull have been difficult to break down at home, while Everton have impressed defensively throughout their unbeaten start to the season. Both teams are well organised, and neither manager is likely to take unnecessary risks.

With Everton’s defensive consistency and Hull’s strong home record, we expect a tight encounter where at least one side could struggle to find the net.
