Fulham and Chelsea bring the opening round of the 2026-27 Premier League season to a close at Craven Cottage on Monday evening, with both clubs beginning new chapters under Spanish managers.

Alvaro Arbeloa has replaced long-serving Marco Silva at Fulham, while Xabi Alonso takes charge of a Chelsea side looking to recover from a disappointing 10th-placed finish last season.

Fulham

Silva’s departure for Benfica brought an end to a five-year spell that transformed Fulham into an established Premier League side, leaving Arbeloa with a difficult act to follow.

The former Real Madrid coach has signed a three-year deal at Craven Cottage and immediately faces one of Fulham’s most significant fixtures.

Chelsea have traditionally dominated the West London derby, but Fulham have begun to change that pattern. They have won two of the last four meetings, including a 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage in January, and can now record consecutive league wins over Chelsea for the first time in more than 40 years.

Fulham’s preparations under Arbeloa have been less convincing. They won only two of their six pre-season matches and managed just one clean sheet, which came in their final friendly against Stuttgart.

There has also been considerable change in attack following the departures of last season’s two leading scorers, Harry Wilson and Raul Jimenez.

Gonzalo Garcia has arrived from Real Madrid and is expected to lead the line, while fellow new signing Cesar Palacios could start from the left. Their ability to settle quickly will be important if Fulham are to replace the goals lost during the summer.

Arbeloa otherwise has a relatively healthy squad. Tom Cairney is sidelined with a knee injury, while Joachim Andersen must complete a three-match suspension carried over from last season.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s latest attempt to find stability has brought Alonso to Stamford Bridge after a chaotic campaign featuring two permanent managers and an interim coach.

The result was a 10th-placed finish and no European football this season, a significant underachievement for a squad containing substantial individual quality.

Alonso’s arrival has nevertheless generated optimism. His preferred 3-4-2-1 system could suit the players at his disposal, particularly after Chelsea strengthened their attacking options further during the summer.

Morgan Rogers has arrived for a British-record transfer fee and could operate alongside Cole Palmer behind Joao Pedro. That trio has the potential to become one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking combinations.

Joao Pedro enters the season in particularly encouraging form. After leading Chelsea with 15 league goals last term, he scored seven times during pre-season and has committed his long-term future to the club.

There remain questions elsewhere in Alonso’s squad. Enzo Fernandez’s long-term future is uncertain, while Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha are unavailable for Monday’s opener.

Wesley Fofana is suspended following his dismissal on the final day of last season, and Danny Welbeck faces a late fitness test.

With no European commitments to manage this season, Alonso should at least have more time on the training ground to implement his ideas and establish the consistency Chelsea have lacked in recent years.

Verdict

Both teams enter this derby adjusting to new managers, making Monday’s encounter more difficult to assess than the historical record might suggest.

Fulham have become increasingly competitive against their neighbours and deservedly won the most recent meeting at Craven Cottage. Arbeloa also inherits a side accustomed to playing together, even if the departures of Wilson and Jimenez leave questions about where the goals will come from.

Chelsea possess the greater individual quality, particularly in attacking areas. If Rogers, Palmer and Joao Pedro begin to click quickly, Fulham could struggle to contain them.

A close contest looks likely, but Chelsea’s superior options in the final third should give Alonso a winning start.

Tip

Chelsea to win.
