The Esports World Cup gets underway with one of the most anticipated tournaments of the Counter-Strike calendar. Thirty-two teams are competing for a share of the $2 million prize pool, with the main stage opening in a double-elimination group format. The opening matches are played as best-of-ones before the tournament switches to best-of-three series, making every early result important for securing the easier path through the bracket.

FaZe and Legacy both arrive after opening-day victories, but the performances leave very different impressions heading into this matchup.

FaZe had to work hard to overcome BetBoom. They looked in complete control during the CT half before struggling to convert rounds once they switched to the T side. What could have become another frustrating collapse instead ended with FaZe showing the composure needed to close out the map when the pressure was at its highest.

Legacy enjoyed a much more comfortable victory over Ninjas in Pyjamas, although the Brazilian side wasn’t tested nearly as much. NiP never looked capable of matching Legacy’s pace, making it difficult to judge exactly where Legacy stand against stronger opposition.

FaZe continue to trend in the right direction

Although FaZe haven’t lifted a trophy recently, their form has been encouraging. They’ve won four of their last five matches, with the only defeat coming in a competitive semi-final against Spirit. Throughout that stretch they’ve looked far more stable than earlier in the season, and the recent decision to sign Neityu permanently after his successful stand-in period gives the roster further continuity heading into one of the year’s biggest tournaments.

Against BetBoom, FaZe’s CT side looked sharp. Rotations were well timed, individuals consistently won opening duels, and they controlled the pace for long periods. Their T side was less convincing, allowing BetBoom back into the game after holding what looked like a comfortable advantage.

Even so, the important takeaway was their response. Instead of letting the match slip away completely, FaZe found the rounds they needed to close out the game. That ability to recover during difficult moments often separates experienced teams from the rest of the field.

Legacy still have something to prove

Legacy deserve credit for reaching this stage and starting the tournament with a win, but their recent results tell a fairly consistent story.

The Brazilians have generally handled teams ranked below them without too many problems, yet they’ve struggled whenever the level of opposition increases. Their record over the last five matches reflects that inconsistency, with only two victories during that period.

NiP offered very little resistance and rarely looked capable of taking control of the match, making it difficult to judge how much confidence should be taken from the result. Facing FaZe is a completely different challenge, particularly against a team that has been competing deep into top-tier events throughout the season.

Legacy certainly have enough firepower to keep the game competitive, but this will be a much tougher test than anything they faced in the opening round.

Experience could make the difference

Opening matches can often produce surprises, but this feels like a matchup where experience should eventually win out. FaZe have been playing against elite opposition consistently throughout the year and have already shown they can recover when games become difficult. Legacy have impressed against lower-ranked teams, yet they haven’t consistently shown the same level when facing stronger opponents.

That gap becomes difficult to ignore in a tournament like the Esports World Cup, where every match carries significant weight from the very beginning.

Verdict

Legacy have enough quality to make this competitive, but FaZe remain the stronger team across almost every department. Their recent form has been solid, they’ve already overcome a difficult opening match, and the experience within this lineup should prove decisive against a Legacy side that has struggled whenever the level of opposition has increased. FaZe may not have everything their own way, but they should have enough quality to book their place in the next round.
