Djurgården have the chance to build momentum in the Allsvenskan on Monday evening when they welcome bottom club Halmstad to the 3Arena in Stockholm.

The hosts finally rediscovered their scoring touch before the summer break with an impressive victory over Häcken, but inconsistency has prevented them from mounting a serious challenge near the top of the table. Halmstad, meanwhile, return to action facing an increasingly urgent fight for survival after a miserable opening to the campaign.

With the gap to the European places still manageable, Djurgården know this is precisely the type of fixture they cannot afford to waste.

Djurgården still searching for consistency

Last season’s fifth-place finish represented Djurgården’s lowest league position in seven years, and there was little doubt inside the club that improvement would be expected in 2026.

While a title challenge already appears unlikely with Sirius setting a relentless pace at the summit, Jani Honkavaara’s side remain firmly in contention for a top-three finish and European qualification.

The 4-2 victory over Häcken before the break was perhaps their most impressive performance of the season so far. Kristian Lien struck twice to continue his excellent campaign, while Djurgården showed the attacking quality that many expected to see more regularly throughout the spring.

That result also highlighted the growing influence of Bo Åslund Hegland, whose creativity has become central to much of Djurgården’s best football this season. The midfielder has already accumulated an impressive assist tally and his understanding with Lien is developing into one of the most productive partnerships in the division.

The biggest frustration for Honkavaara has been the inability to turn strong performances into sustained momentum. Four league defeats already have left Djurgården chasing rather than leading, while their home form remains surprisingly modest for a club of their stature.

There will also be at least one enforced change at the back after Mikael Marques was sent off against Häcken and begins a suspension.

Halmstad’s survival fight growing more difficult

For Halmstad, simply staying in the Allsvenskan is rapidly becoming the only objective that matters. Stuart Baxter’s side sit bottom of the table with just a single victory to their name and already find themselves in danger of being cut adrift if results fail to improve quickly after the summer break.

Defensive problems have defined much of their campaign. Twenty-three goals conceded in 11 matches represents one of the poorest records in the division, while away form has been particularly alarming.

Halmstad have collected just a single point from five matches on the road and have conceded 12 goals during those trips, statistics that make Monday’s visit to Stockholm appear especially daunting.

Recent performances have done little to inspire confidence either. Heavy defeats against Malmö and Västerås before the break exposed familiar weaknesses and left Baxter searching for solutions.

The visitors will also be without suspended right-back André Boman following his dismissal in their previous league outing, forcing another reshuffle in an already fragile defensive unit.

Omar Faraj remains Halmstad’s main source of attacking threat after emerging as their leading scorer, but the visitors have too often struggled to create enough opportunities to relieve pressure on the other end of the pitch.

Verdict

Djurgården have not always convinced this season, but the victory over Häcken felt significant. There was a fluency and confidence to their attacking play that has too often been missing during the opening months of the campaign, and facing the league’s bottom club presents an immediate opportunity to build on that momentum.

Halmstad’s away record and defensive issues make for worrying reading, particularly against opponents who appear to be rediscovering their rhythm in the final third.

If Djurgården can reproduce the intensity and quality they showed before the break, they should have enough to collect another important three points.
