Mexico have already secured their place in the World Cup knockout rounds, but Javier Aguirre’s side still have unfinished business when they face the Czech Republic in their final Group A fixture at Estadio Banorte.

For the visitors, the equation is considerably simpler. After taking only one point from their opening two matches, anything short of victory is likely to bring their tournament to an end.

Analysis

Mexico Have the Luxury of Choice

Few host nations have made a more assured start to a World Cup than Mexico. Two matches, two wins and not a single goal conceded have left El Tri in control of Group A heading into the final round.

The opening victory over South Africa carried the emotion of a tournament curtain-raiser, but the performance against South Korea was arguably more impressive. Mexico were forced to absorb pressure for long spells and showed a level of defensive organisation that has not always been associated with recent national teams.

Aguirre’s side have looked balanced throughout the competition. The midfield has protected the defence effectively, while experienced figures such as Raul Jimenez have delivered when opportunities have arrived.

With qualification already secured, there is every chance the hosts rotate one or two positions. However, finishing top of the group remains a valuable objective, particularly with the knockout bracket beginning to take shape.

Mexico also have the advantage of playing without the desperation that often accompanies final group matches. The pressure rests firmly on their opponents.

Last Chance for the Czechs

The Czech Republic will feel they should have more than one point to show for their efforts. Against South Korea, they led before allowing the game to slip away. Against South Africa, they again put themselves in a winning position before conceding a late equaliser. Across both matches there have been encouraging moments, but football at World Cups is often decided by what happens in the critical moments, and Narodak have repeatedly come up short.

That leaves Miroslav Koubek’s side facing a difficult task against the strongest team in the group. Patrik Schick remains the obvious danger man, while Ladislav Krejci has offered a threat from set pieces throughout the tournament. The issue for the Czechs has not been creating opportunities. It has been turning periods of control into victories.

The challenge on Thursday is obvious. They need to chase three points without opening the door for a Mexican side that has looked increasingly dangerous whenever space appears behind the opposition defence.

Verdict

Mexico have played with maturity and control throughout the group stage, while the Czech Republic have repeatedly found ways to let promising situations slip away.

The visitors are capable of making life uncomfortable for the hosts, particularly if Schick receives decent service, but the circumstances of the match favour Mexico. Aguirre’s men look more settled, more confident and far more comfortable handling the pressure of big occasions.

Expect a competitive contest, but one that ultimately ends with Mexico preserving their unbeaten record and securing first place in Group A.

Tip: Mexico to win
