Curacao’s remarkable World Cup story has already exceeded most expectations, but Dick Advocaat’s side must produce one more unforgettable performance if they are to keep their tournament alive. Standing in their way at Lincoln Financial Field are an Ivory Coast team who know that avoiding defeat will almost certainly be enough to secure a first-ever place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
Both nations are chasing history for different reasons. Curacao are hoping to extend the greatest chapter in their footballing history, while the Elephants have the opportunity to finally end a run of group-stage exits that has frustrated several talented generations.
Curacao Have Earned the Right to Believe
Few teams recover mentally from a 7-1 defeat on the biggest stage in football, yet Curacao responded with one of the performances of the tournament.
After Germany exposed every weakness in their opening fixture, the Caribbean nation regrouped impressively to frustrate Ecuador for 90 minutes, collecting their first-ever World Cup point thanks to a display built on discipline, organisation and an inspired goalkeeper.
Eloy Room was outstanding, producing a string of saves that denied Ecuador throughout the evening and ensured Curacao remained alive heading into the final group game. His performance instantly became one of the standout goalkeeping displays of World Cup 2026.
The mathematics remain difficult. Victory is essential, and even that may not be enough if Ecuador manage to take something from Germany. Nevertheless, Advocaat’s players have already shown they are capable of exceeding expectations, and they will approach this contest believing another upset is possible.
The challenge, though, is very different. Ecuador struggled to convert chances, whereas Ivory Coast possess considerably more pace and variety in the final third.
Ivory Coast Cannot Afford Another Slip
Emerse Fae’s squad experienced both extremes during their first two matches.
A dramatic late victory over Ecuador put the Elephants in an excellent position, but that momentum stalled against Germany. Leading midway through the second half after Franck Kessie’s opener, Ivory Coast looked set to book their place in the knockout rounds before Deniz Undav struck twice, including a stoppage-time winner that completely altered the complexion of the group.
Despite that disappointment, qualification remains firmly within their control.
A draw would almost certainly be enough to send Ivory Coast through thanks to their head-to-head advantage over Ecuador, while victory would remove any uncertainty altogether. The temptation may be to manage the occasion, but sitting back against an opponent with nothing to lose would be a dangerous approach.
Fae’s side have generally carried an attacking threat throughout the tournament. Amad Diallo has looked sharp whenever he has found space, while Yan Diomande continues to develop into one of the revelations of the competition. Combined with the physical presence of Ange-Yoan Bonny, Ivory Coast possess enough weapons to trouble any defence.
The key question is concentration. Curacao have already shown they thrive when opponents underestimate them.
Team News
Curacao are hopeful Jurgen Locadia will be available after the striker was forced off late against Ecuador with a minor knock. Should he fail to recover, Gervane Kastaneer is ready to step into the starting XI.
Captain Leandro Bacuna is poised to equal the national appearance record, while his brother Juninho continues to provide energy and creativity in midfield. At the back, PSV defender Armando Obispo should again marshal a defence that frustrated Ecuador so effectively.
Ivory Coast are monitoring Wilfried Singo after the defender sustained a hamstring problem against Germany. Guela Doue is expected to deputise if Singo is unavailable, while Evan Ndicka has returned to training but may not yet be ready for a first World Cup appearance.
Further forward, there is little reason for Fae to make sweeping changes. Kessie remains the heartbeat of the midfield, with Diallo and Diomande expected to support Bonny once again.
Verdict
Curacao have already become one of the stories of World Cup 2026 and deserve enormous credit for the resilience they showed after their opening defeat. They will compete, they will defend bravely and they are unlikely to make life straightforward for Ivory Coast.
However, sustaining that level of defensive resistance for a second consecutive match against a more clinical attacking side is a different challenge altogether. Ivory Coast know exactly what is required, possess greater quality throughout the squad and should eventually find the breakthrough that sends them into the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
