There may still be another round of group matches elsewhere, but for Croatia and Ghana this already feels like knockout football.
Croatia must win to stay in control of their World Cup destiny, while Ghana only need a point to secure a place in the Round of 32. Those contrasting objectives should produce a fascinating tactical battle at Lincoln Financial Field.
Croatia have rediscovered their composure
The opening defeat to England exposed Croatia’s lack of pace at the back and raised questions about whether Zlatko Dalic’s experienced squad could still compete with the tournament’s elite.
Their response against Panama was exactly what the manager wanted.
It was hardly a spectacular display, but it was controlled, disciplined and, above all, effective. Croatia looked far more secure defensively, while Ante Budimir’s decisive finish rewarded a patient second-half performance.
Now comes the bigger test.
Croatia cannot afford to manage this game conservatively. A draw leaves them heading home, so Dalic’s side will eventually have to commit numbers forward and trust their experienced midfield to dictate the tempo.
As ever, Luka Modric remains central to that plan. Fresh from becoming the first Croatian to reach 200 international appearances, the veteran midfielder continues to set the rhythm when the stakes are highest.
Ghana happy to frustrate
Ghana’s goalless draw against England may prove one of the most valuable results of the entire group stage. Carlos Queiroz produced a defensive masterclass, limiting one of the tournament favourites to sterile possession while rarely allowing clear openings. The Black Stars defended with discipline, remained compact between the lines and never panicked under sustained pressure. They are unlikely to abandon that formula now.
Unlike Croatia, Ghana do not need to chase the game. The longer the score remains level, the greater the pressure shifts onto their opponents. That makes this an awkward assignment for Croatia, who must balance attacking ambition against the danger of being caught on the counter. If Ghana can weather the early stages, frustration could become their greatest ally.
Team news
Croatia have no fresh injury concerns, giving Dalic a full squad to choose from once again. Budimir’s winning contribution against Panama has strengthened his case for a starting place, while Martin Baturina’s creativity should ensure he keeps his role behind the attack.
Ghana are also close to full strength. Benjamin Asare impressed after replacing the injured Lawrence Ati Zigi against England and is expected to retain his place in goal. Carlos Queiroz has little reason to alter the disciplined side that frustrated the Three Lions.
Verdict
This is unlikely to resemble Croatia’s open encounter with England. Ghana will defend in numbers and ask Croatia difficult questions throughout the evening. However, unlike England, Dalic’s side arrive knowing that patience alone will not be enough. They have the technical quality in midfield and greater experience of navigating these high-pressure occasions. It may take time, but Croatia look capable of finding the breakthrough that keeps their World Cup campaign alive.
Tip: Croatia to win.
