Qualification is already secured, but there is still plenty at stake when Colombia and Portugal meet in Miami to decide who tops Group K.

Colombia have made the stronger start and require only a point to finish first, while Portugal know that victory is the only route to leapfrogging Nestor Lorenzo’s side. With a potentially easier knockout draw awaiting the group winners, neither team can afford to treat this as a dead rubber.

Colombia quietly building momentum

Colombia have gone about their business with little fuss, but few teams have looked as balanced through the opening two rounds.

The 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan showcased their attacking quality, while the narrow success against DR Congo demonstrated another side to their game. Faced with a well-organised opponent, Los Cafeteros remained patient, controlled possession and found the decisive moment without ever losing their structure.

That flexibility makes them dangerous. Luis Diaz has carried his club form into the tournament, James Rodriguez continues to dictate attacks whenever space opens up, and Lorenzo’s midfield has consistently controlled matches without exposing the back four.

With qualification already secured, Colombia can approach this game with composure. Portugal are the side under greater pressure.

Portugal have rediscovered their spark

The mood around Portugal changed dramatically after the opening draw with DR Congo. Questions surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s role dominated the headlines before Roberto Martinez’s side responded emphatically by dismantling Uzbekistan 5-0. Ronaldo answered his critics with two goals, but the more encouraging sign for Portugal was the speed and movement around him.

Joao Felix looked sharper, the midfield pressed higher and the team finally resembled one capable of challenging for the trophy. Saturday now presents a different challenge.

Colombia are unlikely to leave the same spaces Uzbekistan did, meaning Portugal will need greater patience in possession and far more defensive discipline whenever they lose the ball.

Team news

Colombia will monitor Luis Suarez after the striker was forced off with a shoulder problem against DR Congo, although early indications suggest he should be fit to start. Lorenzo has little reason to alter a settled side, with Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez and Jefferson Lerma all expected to retain their places.

Portugal remain without complete certainty over Tomas Araujo after the defender’s injury earlier in the tournament, but Roberto Martinez otherwise has a fully competitive squad available. Ronaldo should continue to lead the attack after his brace against Uzbekistan, while Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao are among those pushing for starting roles.

Verdict

This feels like one of the standout matches of the final group round. Both sides possess enough attacking quality to win it, but neither manager will want to hand momentum to a direct rival just days before the knockout phase begins. Colombia have looked marginally more cohesive across the tournament, while Portugal’s ceiling remains exceptionally high when everything clicks.

Expect an entertaining contest between two teams capable of going deep into the competition, but one where neither does quite enough to take all three points.

Tip: Draw.
