Cardiff City make their return to the Championship on Monday evening when they welcome Wrexham to the Cardiff City Stadium for their opening league fixture of the 2026-27 season.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s side secured an immediate return to the second tier after finishing runners-up in League One, while Wrexham narrowly missed the Championship playoffs last season and have invested heavily in another promotion push.

Cardiff have produced some impressive attacking performances during the summer and started their competitive campaign with an EFL Cup victory, but Wrexham represent a significant test of their Championship credentials.

Cardiff return with plenty of attacking confidence

Cardiff’s stay in League One lasted just a single season, and there was little doubt about the quality of their promotion campaign.

The Bluebirds collected 27 victories and 91 points to finish second behind Lincoln City, ending the season 14 points clear of third-placed Stockport County and comfortably securing automatic promotion.

Barry-Murphy has largely kept the core of that successful squad together, with Perry Ng and Joel Bagan signing new contracts, while Nathan Trott and Jack Moylan are among the summer additions.

Moylan could prove particularly important. The midfielder produced 18 goal contributions for champions Lincoln last season and has already opened his Cardiff account, scoring from the bench in their 3-2 EFL Cup victory over Swindon Town.

Yousef Salech scored twice in that game and should continue as the focal point of the attack on Monday. Goals have certainly not been difficult to find this summer. Although Cardiff suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat against Midtjylland, they responded by beating Cork City 6-1 and Forest Green Rovers 5-1 before producing an eye-catching 4-1 victory over Roma.

Moylan is pushing for his first start following his contribution against Swindon, while Joel Colwill is an alternative to David Turnbull alongside Alex Robertson in midfield.

The challenge now is transferring that attacking form into the Championship, where Cardiff will immediately face a team expected to compete towards the top end of the division.

Wrexham targeting another promotion challenge

Wrexham’s remarkable sequence of three consecutive promotions finally ended last season, but they came close to extending it.

Phil Parkinson’s side finished just two points outside the Championship playoff places, establishing themselves as genuine promotion contenders during their first season back in the second tier.

The response this summer has been another significant investment in the squad. Around £16m has been spent on Anthony Patterson, Danny Imray and Benjamin Whiteman as Wrexham attempt to turn last season’s near miss into a top-six finish.

Their pre-season provided some notable results, including victories over Manchester United and Leeds United, alongside defeats against Liverpool and Sunderland.

Competitive action began with disappointment, though, as Wrexham were eliminated from the EFL Cup by Middlesbrough. Will Lankshear scored the only goal, with Parkinson subsequently highlighting his team’s lack of a clinical edge.

That issue will need addressing without last season’s leading scorer Josh Windass, who is unavailable through injury. Davis Keillor-Dunn could partner Sam Smith in attack, while Ben Sheaf and Liberato Cacace are in contention to return.

Zak Vyner, Dominic Hyam and Callum Doyle are expected to continue in defence as Parkinson looks for an immediate response to the cup defeat.

Verdict

Cardiff return to the Championship with momentum from an excellent promotion season and have demonstrated throughout the summer that they carry plenty of attacking threat. Moylan adds another creative option, while Salech has already started the competitive campaign among the goals.

Wrexham, however, already proved last season that they can compete effectively at this level, and their summer investment reflects ambitions considerably higher than simply consolidating in the Championship.

Cardiff should make this a difficult opening night for the visitors, but Wrexham’s greater recent experience at this level and the quality available to Parkinson could give them the advantage.
