Cape Verde have already become one of the stories of the 2026 World Cup. Now they have one more opportunity to turn an impressive debut into an unforgettable one when they face Saudi Arabia in the final round of Group H fixtures. Neither nation controls its own destiny entirely, but victory keeps qualification alive. Lose, and the tournament is over.

Cape Verde have earned the world’s respect

Few expected Cape Verde to trouble Spain on their World Cup debut, yet they emerged with a deserved point after a disciplined defensive display. They followed that by twice taking the lead against Uruguay before eventually settling for a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Those performances have changed perceptions. Rather than simply surviving at this level, Bubista’s side have shown they can compete with established football nations through organisation, athleticism and belief. They head into the final group game unbeaten, knowing that three points could be enough to send them into the knockout rounds depending on events elsewhere.

The challenge now is different. Against Spain and Uruguay they were happy to absorb pressure before breaking forward. On Friday, they may have to shoulder more of the initiative against opponents equally desperate for victory.

Saudi Arabia running out of chances

Saudi Arabia’s campaign began encouragingly with a hard-earned draw against Uruguay, but the heavy defeat to Spain has left the Green Falcons with almost no margin for error.

A win is essential. Georgios Donis knows his players cannot afford another cautious performance. Saudi Arabia must find a way to create more in the final third after managing only one goal across their opening two matches, while also tightening up defensively after Spain repeatedly exposed gaps between midfield and defence.

The pressure is significant, but this squad has produced surprise results on the World Cup stage before and will believe qualification remains possible.

Team news

Cape Verde are forced into at least one defensive change after Sidny Lopes collected his second booking of the tournament. Joao Paulo is expected to step into the back line, while Bubista will also assess Telmo Arcanjo and Jovane Cabral before naming his starting XI.

Saudi Arabia have no fresh injury or suspension concerns following the defeat to Spain. Mohamed Kanno is pushing for a recall in midfield, while Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat is another option to freshen up the wide areas. Firas Al-Buraikan is expected to continue as the focal point of the attack.

Verdict

There is little reason to expect either side to sit back. Saudi Arabia need to win, while Cape Verde know that settling for a draw would leave their qualification hopes hanging by a thread. That should produce a far more open contest than either team has experienced so far.

Cape Verde have looked the more balanced side throughout the group stage. They have defended with discipline, carried a threat on the counter and shown impressive composure under pressure. Saudi Arabia possess enough quality to make life uncomfortable, but the Blue Sharks have earned confidence from two outstanding displays and look capable of writing another memorable chapter.

Tip: Cape Verde to win.
