Bosnia and Herzegovina know exactly what is required. Qatar know exactly what is required. One of them will still have a chance of reaching the knockout rounds when the final whistle blows. The other almost certainly will not.
After two rounds of Group B action, both nations find themselves staring at the same reality heading into Seattle. Neither has managed a victory, neither has looked convincing across 180 minutes, and both now face a match that carries all the pressure of a knockout tie.
Analysis
Bosnia searching for a response
The mood around Bosnia and Herzegovina has shifted dramatically over the course of a week. There was genuine encouragement after the opening draw against Canada, particularly given the quality of the hosts and the occasion surrounding their first World Cup match on home soil. That point suddenly looked even more valuable when Canada dismantled Qatar 6-0 a few days later.
However, any optimism generated by that result evaporated against Switzerland. Sergej Barbarez’s side were second best throughout a 4-1 defeat that exposed several uncomfortable truths. Bosnia struggled defensively whenever Switzerland increased the tempo, while their experienced forward line received little service for long periods.
The suspension of Tarik Muharemovic only adds another complication. That said, Bosnia remain alive. A victory could still be enough to sneak into second place depending on events elsewhere, and they possess players who have operated at a far higher level than most of Qatar’s squad. The challenge is turning that experience into a coherent performance.
Qatar trying to recover from humiliation
There are defeats, and then there are defeats that threaten to derail an entire tournament. Qatar’s 6-0 collapse against Canada falls firmly into the second category. The scoreline was damaging enough. The manner of the performance was arguably worse.
Julen Lopetegui’s side were overwhelmed physically, technically and mentally. By the closing stages they had lost their discipline as well as the match, finishing with nine men and leaving themselves short-handed for a game they simply cannot afford to lose.
The suspensions of Homam Ahmed and Assim Madibo remove two experienced figures from a team already lacking confidence. Yet football has a habit of offering immediate redemption.
The pressure now sits differently on Qatar. Nobody expects them to advance after what happened in Vancouver. That can sometimes be liberating. If they can rediscover the organisation that earned a draw against Switzerland in their opening fixture, they remain capable of making life uncomfortable for Bosnia.
The problem is that one encouraging display and one disastrous display have left nobody entirely sure which version of Qatar will appear in Seattle.
Verdict
Neither side arrives with momentum. Bosnia were outclassed by Switzerland. Qatar were overwhelmed by Canada. Both have defensive issues, both have disciplinary concerns and both understand the consequences of another setback.
That often creates a cagey atmosphere, but Bosnia appear slightly better equipped to handle the occasion. They have more proven quality in attacking areas and should benefit from facing a Qatar side whose confidence must have taken a severe hit after conceding six goals. It may not be pretty, but Bosnia have an opportunity to keep their World Cup alive.
Tip
Bosnia and Herzegovina to win.
