Bodø/Glimt welcome Borussia Dortmund to Aspmyra for a Champions League meeting that promises to test both sides. The Norwegian champions have built a reputation for making life difficult for visiting European clubs, but Dortmund arrive with the experience and individual quality to present a formidable challenge.
Glimt’s European ambitions face another test
Bodø/Glimt’s rise in European football has been built on a recognisable playing identity. Under Kjetil Knutsen, the Norwegian side have developed an approach based on quick passing, coordinated movement and an aggressive press that can unsettle even experienced opponents.
Aspmyra has been central to that success. Glimt are accustomed to the artificial surface and the demands of playing in northern Norway, while visiting teams often have to adjust to a different environment from the one they encounter in their domestic leagues.
The challenge against Dortmund will be maintaining that identity without becoming too exposed defensively. Glimt are at their best when they can establish possession and push players into advanced positions, but committing too many bodies forward against a Bundesliga opponent carries obvious risks.
Their midfield will have an important role in controlling transitions. Losing possession in central areas could allow Dortmund to attack before the Norwegian side have recovered their defensive shape.
Dortmund have the quality to punish mistakes
Borussia Dortmund bring considerable European experience into this fixture. The German club are familiar with the demands of Champions League football and have the attacking quality to exploit defensive gaps.
Dortmund’s biggest opportunity could come when Glimt commit players forward. Quick transitions, movement between the lines and direct running into space can be particularly effective against opponents who prefer to defend on the front foot.
However, Dortmund cannot simply expect to dominate because of their reputation. Glimt have repeatedly demonstrated that they are comfortable taking the initiative against stronger opponents, particularly at home.
The visitors will need to remain disciplined when possession changes hands. If their midfield fails to contain Glimt’s combinations, Dortmund could find themselves defending sustained periods of pressure rather than controlling the contest.
That balance between attacking ambition and defensive organisation is likely to shape the match.
Previous meeting offers encouragement for Glimt
The clubs have already produced one memorable Champions League encounter. When they met in Dortmund in December 2025, the Norwegian side twice came from behind to secure a 2–2 draw.
Julian Brandt scored both goals for Dortmund, but Haitam Aleesami and Jens Petter Hauge responded for Glimt. The result showed that Knutsen’s side could compete with Dortmund even away from home.
This season’s European campaigns have begun very differently. Glimt suffered a 5–0 defeat away to Bayern Munich in their opening league-phase match, while Dortmund beat Villarreal 3–2.
The Bayern result highlighted how quickly Glimt can be punished when their opponents find space. Dortmund will look to exploit similar weaknesses, although playing at Aspmyra presents a different challenge from facing Bayern in Munich.
Glimt also have reason to believe they can cause problems for the visitors. Their previous draw in Dortmund demonstrated that they can recover from setbacks rather than abandon their attacking approach.
Two sides with reasons to attack
Dortmund enter the second round with three points and an opportunity to strengthen their position in the league phase. Glimt, meanwhile, are looking for their first points after the difficult opening defeat in Germany.
That situation could influence how both teams approach the match. Glimt will want to make use of their home advantage, while Dortmund have enough attacking quality to pursue a victory rather than settle for a cautious performance.
Patrick Berg’s influence in midfield will be particularly important for the hosts. His positioning and distribution help Glimt move the ball through pressure and establish their rhythm. Dortmund will want to disrupt that supply and force mistakes in dangerous areas.
At the other end, Glimt must find a way to limit Dortmund’s movement around the penalty area. Their defensive organisation will be tested whenever the visitors manage to break through the initial press.
Neither side can afford to become careless, but there are good reasons to expect both teams to create opportunities.
Verdict
Dortmund are deserved favourites, particularly after Glimt’s heavy defeat against Bayern Munich. However, the Norwegian side have already shown they can score against Dortmund, having earned a 2–2 draw in Germany last season. Playing at Aspmyra should give Glimt greater confidence to impose their own style, while Dortmund possess the quality to punish defensive mistakes. The combination of Glimt’s home threat and Dortmund’s attacking strength makes a match with goals at both ends an attractive possibility.
