Belgium may have topped Group G, but few would argue they have looked like genuine World Cup contenders. Their route to the knockout rounds was efficient rather than convincing, leaving the impression that there is still another level waiting to be unlocked.

Senegal arrive in Seattle with far less pressure and considerably more momentum. Written off after successive defeats to France and Norway, the Lions of Teranga responded with a statement performance against Iraq to keep their tournament alive. That turnaround has given them the belief that their World Cup story is only just beginning.

Belgium searching for their best football

Results have kept Belgium on course, but performances have remained a work in progress. The opening draw with Egypt exposed a lack of sharpness, while the stalemate against Iran highlighted how difficult Garcia’s side can find it to break down organised defences. Only in the final group match against New Zealand did everything click, as Belgium finally played with the tempo and attacking freedom expected from a squad containing Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Leandro Trossard.

The challenge now is proving that display was not an exception. Belgium’s biggest strength remains the variety of their attacking options. Goals have come from across the team rather than relying on one individual, making them difficult to prepare for when the midfield begins dictating possession.

At the other end, though, there have still been moments of uncertainty. Against stronger opposition than New Zealand, those lapses are far less likely to go unpunished.

Senegal have rediscovered their belief

Few teams have experienced a more dramatic swing in mood during the group stage. After narrow defeats to France and Norway, Senegal knew there would be no margin for error against Iraq. Rather than playing with tension, they produced their most adventurous football of the tournament, becoming the first African nation to score five goals in a single World Cup match.

That victory did more than secure qualification. It reminded everyone why this squad has been considered one of Africa’s strongest for several years. Ismaïla Sarr has carried much of the attacking responsibility, Sadio Mané continues to provide leadership in the biggest moments, and Pape Thiaw has shown a willingness to adapt tactically when circumstances demand it.

The concern lies further back. Senegal have conceded in every match so far, and leaving space for Belgium’s creative players is a dangerous game to play over 90 minutes.

Team news

Belgium have few selection headaches. Zeno Debast is edging closer to full fitness after returning to training, although Arthur Theate is expected to continue in central defence alongside the established back line. Courtois remains the foundation behind a side likely to feature De Bruyne, Lukaku and tournament top scorer Trossard from the outset.

Senegal’s biggest concern surrounds goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, whose knee injury leaves his availability in serious doubt after departing the squad for further assessment. Abdoulaye Seck could keep his place in defence after an assured display against Iraq, while Sarr and Mané remain the focal points of the attack.

Verdict

This feels like one of the more evenly balanced ties in the round of 32. Belgium possess greater individual quality and the experience of players who have contested the latter stages of major tournaments. Senegal, however, bring athleticism, pace and the confidence generated by their explosive finish to the group stage.

If Belgium control possession, De Bruyne should eventually create the openings needed. If the game becomes stretched, Senegal have enough speed to expose defensive weaknesses.

Expect a contest that remains in the balance deep into the second half before Belgium’s superior quality edges them through.

Tip: Belgium to win.
