Group G may not have attracted the same attention as some of the tournament’s glamour sections before kick-off, but after the opening round it has become one of the most difficult groups to predict.

All four teams remain level on points, leaving Belgium and Iran with a chance to seize control of their own destiny on Sunday. Neither side produced a complete performance in their opener, yet both emerged believing there is considerably more to come. In a group where fine margins could separate progression from elimination, this already feels like one of the most important matches of the second round.

Analysis

Belgium Still Searching For Their Identity

Belgium’s opening draw with Egypt felt familiar in both encouraging and frustrating ways.

There were flashes of the technical quality that has defined Belgian football for more than a decade, but there were also periods where the team looked vulnerable, predictable and overly reliant on moments from established stars.

That has become a recurring theme since the peak years of the so-called golden generation.

The current squad still contains players capable of influencing matches at the highest level. Kevin De Bruyne remains one of the game’s outstanding creators, while the likes of Leandro Trossard and Jeremy Doku provide attacking threat from different areas of the pitch. The issue is less about talent and more about consistency.

Against Egypt, Belgium struggled to impose themselves for long periods and only found a route back into the match after introducing additional experience and physicality. Rudi Garcia will be looking for a more authoritative display here, particularly given the significance of the fixture.

The positive for Belgium is that they rarely lack opportunities. The concern is that opponents increasingly believe they can cause them problems.

Iran Continue To Thrive As Outsiders

Iran have spent much of the build-up to this tournament dealing with issues beyond football, making their opening performance all the more impressive. Twice they fell behind against New Zealand. Twice they responded.

That resilience has become one of the defining characteristics of Team Melli under Amir Ghalenoei. While Iran may not possess the squad depth of some European nations, they remain exceptionally difficult to break mentally.

The draw with New Zealand also highlighted the strengths that have carried Iran through multiple qualification campaigns. They are organised, disciplined and comfortable operating without extended periods of possession. Most importantly, they know exactly how they want to play.

Mehdi Taremi remains the focal point, but Iran are not a one-man team. The supporting cast consistently contribute, particularly in transitional moments where the team can be surprisingly dangerous.

The logistical complications surrounding their participation have inevitably attracted attention, yet the opening match suggested those distractions have not damaged the squad’s focus.

Iran arrive knowing that another positive result would place genuine pressure on Belgium and significantly improve their own qualification hopes.

A Test Of Patience

This fixture has all the ingredients of a contest decided by decision-making rather than dominance. Belgium are likely to enjoy more possession and spend longer periods in attacking areas. Iran will be comfortable with that reality. Their objective will be to remain compact, frustrate their opponents and exploit any spaces that appear when Belgium commit players forward.

That dynamic places considerable responsibility on Belgium. The Red Devils cannot afford to become impatient if chances do not arrive immediately. Egypt demonstrated that organised opponents can disrupt Belgium’s rhythm, and Iran possess the discipline to attempt something similar.

At the same time, Belgium arguably have more match-winners capable of deciding tight encounters. In tournament football, that quality often proves decisive when games become tense and cagey.

Verdict

Iran have already shown enough to suggest they will not be overawed by the occasion. Their organisation, resilience and tactical clarity should ensure Belgium are made to work for every opportunity.

However, Belgium still possess the greater attacking quality and a broader range of solutions when matches become difficult. They were below their best against Egypt and should improve as the tournament progresses.

A closely contested encounter looks likely, but the Europeans may have just enough quality in key moments to edge a result that could prove crucial in the race for qualification.

Tip

Belgium to win.

Iran should remain competitive throughout, but Belgium’s superior depth in attacking areas can make the difference in what promises to be a tight and hard-fought Group G clash.
