Australia and Egypt meet in Arlington with both nations sensing a rare opportunity. The Socceroos have made the knockout rounds for the third time in their World Cup history, while Egypt are enjoying their best tournament for generations after coming through Group G unbeaten. Neither side will view this as a glamour tie, but that is exactly what makes it so important. A place in the last 16 is there for the team that handles the occasion better.

Australia built their progress on discipline

Australia’s group stage was not spectacular, but it was effective. The opening win over Turkey gave Tony Popovic’s side the platform they needed, and although the defeat to the United States exposed their limitations, the goalless draw with Paraguay showed a team comfortable protecting what it had earned.

That defensive discipline will again be central here. Australia are unlikely to dominate possession, but their structure has made them difficult to open up when games slow down. Lucas Herrington has emerged as an important figure at the back, while the midfield works hard to deny opponents easy access through central areas.

The question is whether they can create enough at the other end. With Mathew Leckie and Jacob Italiano unavailable, the burden increases on Nestory Irankunda to provide speed, unpredictability and a finishing touch. If Australia are to reach the last 16, they may need one moment of quality rather than sustained pressure.

Egypt’s progress has come at a cost

Egypt’s group campaign was impressive, but it has left Hossam Hassan with a growing injury list. The Pharaohs held Belgium, beat New Zealand and drew with Iran to finish level on points with the group winners. That unbeaten run reflects a side with greater balance than many expected, and Mohamed Salah has again been central to their best attacking moments.

His fitness now dominates the buildup. If Salah is available from the start, Egypt immediately look more dangerous. If he is restricted or absent, responsibility shifts towards Omar Marmoush, Trezeguet and the supporting midfield to carry the attack.

The suspension of Mohanad Lasheen also removes another piece from Hassan’s midfield, while defensive doubts over Hossam Abdelmaguid, Mohamed Abdelmonem and Ahmed El Fotouh leave Egypt looking less settled than they did earlier in the tournament.

Team news

Australia are without Leckie and Italiano through injury, but Popovic otherwise has most of his key players available. An unchanged side is possible after the draw with Paraguay, with Herrington again expected to start in central defence and Irankunda leading the attack.

Egypt are waiting on several fitness calls. Salah remains the major concern because of a hamstring issue, while Hamdy Fathy, Abdelmaguid, Abdelmonem and El Fotouh are also doubts. Lasheen is suspended after picking up another booking against Iran.

Verdict

This looks like a match that could be decided by availability as much as form. Australia are organised, physical and comfortable in low-scoring contests, but they lack the attacking depth to overwhelm Egypt. The Pharaohs have more potential match-winners, yet their injury concerns make this far less straightforward than it might have looked after the group stage. If Salah starts, Egypt should have enough craft to edge through. If he does not, extra time would not surprise anyone.

Tip: Egypt to win.
