Aston Villa host Nottingham Forest on Thursday evening in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final, trailing 1-0 after Chris Wood’s penalty settled last week’s opener at the City Ground. The winner advances to the Istanbul final later this month.

Villa are chasing their first continental final in four decades. Yet their recent form has stuttered dramatically. Three consecutive defeats—including a listless 2-1 loss to relegation-bound Tottenham on Sunday—have derailed what had been a near-flawless European campaign. Unai Emery’s attempt to rotate and rest key men backfired spectacularly; his side managed just one touch in the Spurs box before half-time.

The midfield absences compound the problem. Boubacar Kamara remains injured, Amadou Onana has not recovered from a calf strain, and Ross Barkley is ineligible. John McGinn, the captain, missed Sunday through a hamstring complaint but should return on Thursday. These gaps in defensive midfield stability arrive at a moment when Villa cannot afford vulnerability.

Yet Villa Park remains a fortress. They have won all six European matches at home this season, scoring 14 goals while conceding three. Ollie Watkins, their captain and top scorer with four Europa League goals, will lead the line. Morgan Rogers has been directly involved in five goals from six home appearances in the competition.

Nottingham Forest, by contrast, have found peak form precisely when it matters. Vítor Pereira’s arrival in February sparked an unexpected revival, and they are now unbeaten in ten across all competitions—winning five of those. On Monday, they dismantled Chelsea 3-0 despite rotating heavily, with Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi scoring. They have conceded just three goals in their last six matches.

Forest have also travelled expertly in European knockout football, avoiding defeat in every away leg. Jesus leads the competition with 34 shots and 16 on target; he was brilliant against Chelsea but Awoniyi is not on Forest’s UEFA squad list, meaning Chris Wood will spearhead their attack in Birmingham.

However, injuries shadow Forest’s challenge. Morgan Gibbs-White sustained a deep cut after colliding with Chelsea’s goalkeeper and remains a doubt. They are already without Ola Aina, Ibrahim Sangare, and Murillo. Dan Ndoye is questionable; Nicolo Savona, Callum Hudson-Odoi, John Victor, and Willy Boly are all sidelined.

Match Analysis

At the City Ground, Forest restricted Villa to 0.8 expected goals, establishing control through discipline and structure. Now Villa must chase—but not recklessly. Forest can be patient—but not passive.

Villa’s attacking weight rests on Watkins and Rogers, with creativity from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendía tasked with breaking down a compact Forest block. Yet the midfield vulnerabilities—Onana absent, Kamara injured—reduce defensive security when they need it most.

Forest’s defining trait in European knockouts is their ability to manage leads. They have been eliminated from just one of their last 13 two-legged ties when winning the first leg. Pereira has not lost a semi-final second leg at this level in 14 years. Jesus remains their driving force, though Wood must carry more responsibility. Omari Hutchinson provides unpredictable creativity.

The injury picture is decisive. Gibbs-White’s absence would hurt Forest’s midfield control. For Villa, McGinn’s return is essential; without him, they risk being overrun in transition against a side built for the counter-attack.

Verdict

Villa are formidable at home and history slightly favours them. Yet Forest have peaked at the perfect moment and possess the experience to manage a slender lead. Villa’s recent instability, combined with their midfield absences, suggests Forest’s defensive discipline and clinical finishing in transition will likely prevail.
