Accrington Stanley begin their EFL Trophy campaign on Tuesday evening when Sunderland U21 make the trip to the Wham Stadium for their Northern Group A opener. The competition offers John Doolan’s side an opportunity to find some momentum after a difficult beginning to their League Two season, but Sunderland’s youngsters arrive in Lancashire having produced some eye-catching attacking numbers. With Salford City and Sheffield Wednesday completing the group, an opening victory would immediately put either side in a useful position in the battle for two knockout places.

Analysis

Stanley need the Trophy to provide a spark

Accrington’s start to 2026-27 has been frustrating rather than disastrous, but seven League Two matches have brought only one victory and six points.

Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Newport County summed up some of the problem. Stanley finally recorded a clean sheet, but it was also an unusual occasion on which their attack failed to find a way through. Across their previous five matches they had scored eight times and conceded nine, illustrating how difficult Doolan has found it to establish consistency at either end.

The positive is that the Wham Stadium has remained a source of stability. Accrington are unbeaten in their last five competitive home matches, and the club’s record when hosting academy teams in this competition is particularly encouraging. Stanley have won seven of their last eight EFL Trophy encounters against Under-21 opposition, with Nottingham Forest U21 responsible for the only defeat in that sequence back in November 2023.

Recent Trophy campaigns have been less successful overall. Accrington have gone out in the group stage in each of the last two seasons, having reached the knockout rounds in 2024, so there is room for improvement in a competition that can provide valuable competitive minutes to the wider squad.

That may influence Doolan’s selection on Tuesday. Stanley were in League Two action only three days ago and travel to Swindon on Saturday, making some rotation a sensible possibility. Devon Matthews is available again after missing the Newport draw through suspension, but confirmed team information remains limited ahead of kick-off and it would be premature to assume wholesale changes. Kelsey Mooney is reported to be unavailable because of a knee problem.

Whatever personnel Doolan chooses, this is an opportunity Accrington should take seriously. Their league campaign has yet to settle, and a convincing performance against youthful opposition could provide something that has been in relatively short supply during the opening weeks: momentum.

Sunderland’s youngsters rarely produce a quiet evening

If Accrington’s early season has been characterised by inconsistency, Sunderland U21’s has been characterised by goals. Matt Craddock’s youngsters opened their Premier League 2 campaign with a thumping 5-1 victory over Nottingham Forest U21. Brentford then inflicted precisely the same scoreline on Sunderland before the Black Cats responded impressively, beating Ipswich Town U21 4-2 and Norwich City U21 3-1.

That amounts to 13 goals scored across those four matches – and nine conceded. It makes Sunderland an intriguing opponent for a senior Accrington team. Their attacking talent is obvious, but so is the space opponents have been able to exploit.

Indeed, Sunderland have not kept a competitive clean sheet in 16 matches, dating back to a shutout against Crystal Palace U21 in March. Nine of their last 10 games have produced at least three goals, while both teams have scored in each of their last 10.

Those numbers make it difficult to imagine Craddock suddenly abandoning the attacking approach that has defined his side. This competition presents a different test, though. Premier League 2 allows young players to compete primarily against footballers at a similar stage of development; the EFL Trophy puts them against experienced professionals accustomed to the physical and tactical demands of senior football.

Sunderland also have a poor recent away record to overcome. They have lost their last four competitive matches on the road, conceding 14 goals across that sequence.

The Black Cats are returning to the competition after a lengthy absence. Their U21 side last participated in the EFL Trophy in 2018-19, so Tuesday represents a new experience for the current generation. Sunderland have confirmed that Craddock’s side will also face Sheffield Wednesday and Salford City in their remaining group fixtures.

For Sunderland, results are naturally only part of the equation. Giving young players meaningful senior opposition is one of the principal attractions of the competition, and the Wham Stadium should provide precisely that. But the visitors’ recent scoring form means Accrington cannot afford to treat them merely as an academy side.

Verdict

This is an interesting clash of two very different types of team. Accrington possess the senior experience, home advantage and an excellent recent record against Under-21 opposition in this competition. Sunderland bring considerably more unpredictability: they have already scored 13 goals in four Premier League 2 matches, but have also conceded nine and are still searching for their first clean sheet of the season.

Rotation introduces an element of uncertainty, particularly with Stanley having played on Saturday and returning to League Two action this weekend.

Even so, Sunderland’s defensive record should offer the hosts opportunities. The visitors have enough attacking quality to cause problems of their own, and another high-scoring Black Cats fixture would hardly be surprising.

Stanley’s greater senior experience may ultimately make the difference, but they are unlikely to have everything their own way.

Our prediction: Accrington Stanley 2-1 Sunderland U21.
