Bristol City will attempt to put a difficult few days behind them when Watford visit Ashton Gate in the Championship on Friday evening.

Michael Skubala’s side have suffered consecutive league defeats after an otherwise encouraging opening to the campaign, while Alessio Dionisi is still searching for consistency from a Watford team with only two victories from seven matches. With both clubs playing their third game in six days, squad management could also have an important influence on proceedings.

Analysis

Bristol City’s results have dipped, but the performances offer encouragement

Two defeats in the space of four days have changed the complexion of Bristol City’s start under Skubala. The Robins recovered from a difficult opening week to put together an unbeaten sequence against Birmingham City, Portsmouth, Preston North End and Burnley, collecting 10 points from their first five Championship fixtures.

That momentum disappeared with Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Southampton before Lincoln City left Ashton Gate with a 1-0 victory on Tuesday.

The scorelines are concerning, particularly after conceding four at St Mary’s, but Bristol City’s underlying performances have not been quite as poor as the results suggest. They registered considerably more attempts than Southampton despite the heavy defeat and again produced twice as many shots as Lincoln without finding a way past the newly-promoted side.

For Skubala, that presents a relatively straightforward problem to diagnose but a less straightforward one to solve. Bristol City are getting into positions from which they can hurt opponents; they now need to turn more of that territorial control into goals.

Friday provides an immediate opportunity. A victory would quickly return the Robins towards the playoff positions, although their home form needs improvement. Three defeats at Ashton Gate already this season continue a trend from 2025-26, when City managed only nine Championship victories on their own ground.

The demanding schedule could persuade Skubala to make changes after using the same core of players through much of the recent run. Sam Greenwood and Dom Ballard are among those available to freshen up the attack.

One player unlikely to be displaced is Rio Cardines. The full-back has been one of City’s most productive attacking outlets and leads the Championship with five assists, an impressive return so early in the season.

Luke McNally remains the only confirmed absentee, with the defender continuing his long recovery from the cruciate ligament injury suffered in January 2025.

Watford’s new era is struggling to find momentum

Dionisi has quickly discovered the difficulty of establishing stability at Watford. The Italian became the club’s 12th permanent head coach since the conclusion of the 2020-21 campaign, and seven Championship matches into his tenure, the Hornets remain difficult to assess.

Their opening-day victory over Southampton suggested an encouraging transition was possible, but Watford subsequently went four league matches without winning.

A 2-1 comeback victory against Preston finally provided a second success, only for Stoke City to win by the same scoreline at Vicarage Road last weekend.

The result left Watford 17th with eight points from seven matches, and their problems have been particularly noticeable away from Hertfordshire. They have managed only one goal on their travels so far.

That lack of attacking productivity could be significant against a Bristol City team determined to control Friday’s match after successive defeats.

Dionisi’s preparations are further complicated by an increasingly crowded treatment room. Jordan Zemura was forced off before half time against Stoke and will miss the trip, with Omar Haktab expected to replace him at left-back.

Marc Bola, Jeremy Ngakia, Branimir Mlacic, Jack Grieves, Edoardo Bove, Kwadwo Baah and Myron Boadu are also unavailable, substantially reducing Dionisi’s room for manoeuvre during a particularly congested week.

There could, however, be a significant moment for Michail Antonio. The former West Ham striker joined Watford last week and was included among the substitutes against Stoke. Antonio has not played competitively since December 2024 following the serious injuries he suffered in a car accident, meaning any involvement at Ashton Gate would represent his first competitive appearance in approximately 20 months.

Whether he is ready to contribute substantially remains another matter, but Watford could certainly benefit from an additional attacking option.

Recent history provides mixed encouragement for the visitors. Watford took four points from the two Championship meetings with Bristol City last season, but the Robins emphatically reversed that trend when they won 5-1 in their FA Cup encounter around the turn of the year.

Verdict

Neither side arrives in particularly convincing form, but there is a meaningful difference between their respective problems.

Bristol City have lost twice while continuing to create a healthy number of opportunities. Watford’s concern is more fundamental: they have struggled to produce enough attacking threat, particularly away from home, while Dionisi is also dealing with a substantial injury list.

The schedule could make this a more disjointed contest than Skubala would like, and Watford have enough quality to ensure the hosts cannot simply dominate from start to finish.

Still, if Bristol City reproduce the attacking volume of their last two matches with greater efficiency in front of goal, Ashton Gate should finally have something to celebrate.

Our prediction: Bristol City 2-1 Watford.
