One of Norwegian football’s biggest rivalries takes centre stage at Åråsen Stadion on Saturday afternoon as Lillestrøm host Vålerenga in the latest edition of the derby.
LSK already have one derby victory to celebrate this season, having beaten Vålerenga 2-0 at Intility Arena in April, and they approach the return meeting buoyed by an impressive 2-1 success away to Brann last weekend.
Analysis
Lillestrøm
Lillestrøm have experienced an uneven few weeks, but their victory in Bergen was precisely the kind of performance they needed before welcoming their fiercest rivals to Åråsen.
Hans Erik Ødegaard’s side spent long periods without the ball against Brann but made their opportunities count, with Felix Vá and Fredrik Gulbrandsen scoring in a 2-1 victory. LSK had only 27% possession but still managed four attempts on target, demonstrating an ability to hurt one of the division’s stronger sides without controlling the game territorially.
It was also a significant response to their recent difficulties at Åråsen. Lillestrøm have actually lost their last three home league matches, so the idea that home form alone makes them favourites for the derby does not stand up to scrutiny.
The Brann result nevertheless gives them something tangible to build on, particularly with Gulbrandsen finding his rhythm following his return to the club.
The experienced striker has six Eliteserien goals across the 2026 season, although four were scored earlier in the campaign before his move to Lillestrøm. More relevantly for Saturday, he has now scored twice for LSK and is beginning to provide the penalty-box presence Ødegaard needs.
Vá is another player Vålerenga will have to contain. His goal in Bergen continued an excellent individual campaign, and he currently carries Lillestrøm’s highest average league performance rating according to FotMob.
Then there is the derby itself. LSK produced an accomplished performance at Intility Arena in April to win the first meeting 2-0. That result should give them confidence, but the intensity surrounding this fixture means there is little value in assuming the return match will follow the same pattern.
There are also selection issues to consider. Camil Jebara is among the players listed as unavailable for Lillestrøm, so Ødegaard does not have a completely clean bill of health going into the derby.
What LSK do possess is momentum from one of their best away results of the season. Following three successive home defeats, there could hardly be a better occasion on which to rediscover their Åråsen form.
Vålerenga
Vålerenga make the short journey to Lillestrøm with revenge firmly on the agenda after April’s defeat in Oslo. Their immediate form offers a mixture of encouragement and concern. Vålerenga drew 2-2 away to Sarpsborg 08 last weekend, once again demonstrating that they carry sufficient attacking threat to trouble opponents but are not always convincing when asked to protect themselves at the other end.
That could make Saturday’s tactical battle particularly interesting. Lillestrøm showed against Brann that they do not require prolonged possession to create dangerous situations. If Vålerenga commit too many players forward and leave spaces during transitions, Vá and the increasingly sharp Gulbrandsen give the hosts players capable of exploiting them.
Vålerenga will nevertheless see reasons to believe they can take something from Åråsen. LSK’s three successive home defeats are impossible to ignore, and the visitors should not approach the match with the mentality of a side merely hoping to survive.
Their squad has also received late reinforcement for the closing stages of the campaign, adding further options as the season enters an important phase.
Team availability may force some adjustments, though. Magnus Sjøeng and Fidel Brice Ambina are among the players currently listed as unavailable, reducing the choices available ahead of a fixture where experience and composure could prove particularly important.
More than anything, Vålerenga must produce a better derby performance than they managed in April. Losing 2-0 at home to LSK was painful enough; allowing their rivals to complete the league double at Åråsen would be considerably worse.
Verdict
This is a more difficult game to call than Lillestrøm’s victory in the first derby might suggest. LSK have the psychological advantage of that 2-0 win and arrive after beating Brann away, with Vá performing well and Gulbrandsen now scoring for his new club. On the other hand, three consecutive defeats at Åråsen are a significant warning against simply backing the hosts on the strength of home advantage.
Vålerenga have enough attacking quality to make this far more competitive than the April meeting, but their own defensive vulnerability makes it difficult to trust them to keep LSK quiet.
Derbies can develop their own rhythm, but the available evidence points towards chances at both ends. We give Lillestrøm a narrow edge following their performance in Bergen and their success in the reverse fixture.
Our prediction: Lillestrøm 2-1 Vålerenga.
Tip
Our tip: Both teams to score.
